Martin Luther King Jr. Day exists because of a 15-year movement fueled by persistence and hope. Representative John Conyers first introduced the bill to establish the holiday, and Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday” became a powerful rallying cry. President Ronald Reagan signed it into law, and by 2000, all 50 states officially recognized Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a state holiday.
Dr. King was one of the most powerful voices of the Civil Rights Movement, calling for justice through nonviolent resistance to segregation and discrimination. His words continue to be shared at commemorations and quoted in speeches today, reminding us that the pursuit of equality and justice is ongoing.
