: Internet Addiction and the Relationship to Self and Interpersonal Functioning Within the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD): Implications for Psychosocial Development, a dissertation published by Lori Woehler, a 2021 PsyD graduate, explores the relationship between interconnected mobile devices, applications, and social media, internet addiction, and the affects on interpersonal functioning.

The dissertation’s abstract: “Internet addictive use inclusive of inextricably interconnected mobile devices, applications, and social media predicts diminished Self and Interpersonal functioning. Internet addiction research is burdened by conflicting theoretical views, lack of standardized definitions and criteria, and the use of assessment measures adapted from those used for substance use disorders.

Alternative and dimensional diagnostic models for internet addiction through a psychosocial developmental lens might further understanding of Internet addiction and reduce challenges which impact the ability to advance research and achieve clinically useful, culturally informed, and evidence-based practices for the assessment and treatment of Internet addiction.”

Kyla Crawford, a 2017 graduate of the Master of Arts in Teaching program, firmly believes that when students are empowered, they get a glimpse of who they are and who they have yet to become. That is why she has made it her mission to create equitable change in the classroom she serves.

“I watched boys of color around me [be] harassed by the police. My brother got harassed often on the way to school: police checked his backpack,” says Kyla. “My darker-skinned brother got openly profiled, was wrongfully accused of a crime, and did almost ten years in prison.”

Witnessing these injustices inspired Kyla to advocate for boys of color within her local community. Today she is a STEAM teacher in the Tukwila School District.

ParentMap did a feature story on Kyla in 2025, alongside community mentor Gerald Donaldson: https://www.parentmap.com/article/education-supporting-students-Kyla-Crawford-Gerald-Donaldson

In observance of Month, we’re sharing a dissertation from Shihan Xu, PsyD, a 2025 graduate of the PsyD program in Clinical Psychology.

This study examined the unique stressors encountered by international college students, with particular attention to East Asian international students, whose collectivistic cultural values contribute to their mental health status and reported symptoms. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the rise in stress levels and loneliness highlighted the need for further examination.

Using data collected in 2024 through the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms-34 (CCAPS-34) and the UCLA Loneliness Scale, the study surveyed East Asian international students enrolled in universities in the United States to identify prevalent mental health concerns and explore the correlation between loneliness and self-reported symptoms among East Asian international students.

May is observed as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

At the time of this interview, in 2023, MaiLinh Hartz was a student in the MA in Couple and Family Therapy program and a co-leader in the on-campus of the Counselors of Color Student Support Group.

For MaiLinh, exploring her own background as a person with Chinese, Vietnamese, German, and Finnish ancestry has been a large part of Hartz’s personal and professional pathway.

“Recognizing that in my own journey of healing and trying to find a therapist who shares my identities, recognizing how challenging that has been, informs me that there’s such a need for therapists of color of all backgrounds,” said Hartz. “Everyone has a unique story, identity, and life experience that makes them uniquely valuable as a therapist.”

If you’ve been keeping up with the news, you may have seen the artificial intelligence data center boom happening across the country. Requiring copious amounts of water, electricity, and land to operate, these data centers infringe on our natural world, our communities, and our quality of life. Often, these data centers are located near marginalized communities, indigenous tribes, and rural areas, taking away from the community's needs, livelihoods, and draining resources.

This Earth Day, we want to take a moment to educate others on the looming dangers of data centers. As individuals, we can gather together to make our stances known and reject these developments by reaching out to local legislators and lawmakers, while also practicing our right to vote.
