ထမနဲပွဲ (Htamanè Pwè or the Rice Harvest Festival) observes the completion of an annual rice growing cycle in Burma/Myanmar. This time coincides with the full moon day of တပို့တွဲ, the eleventh month of the Burmese calendar, as well as with the cold season. A tradition of ထမနဲပွဲ is to prepare ထမနဲ (htamanè), a group activity calling for a giant wok in which glutinous rice is softened, kneaded, and crushed into a thick, sticky paste using oar-shaped paddles. Due to the viscosity and mass of the glutinous rice, this requires multiple individuals to handle each paddle as well as shifts of helpers to finish the preparation. At different stages of the process, the glutinous rice is mixed with seasonings such as ginger, peanuts, shredded coconut, and sesame seeds.

Everyone is welcome to play a role in the preparation of ထမနဲ, and we invite you to join the festivities. The preparation of ထမနဲ will occur on Saturday, February 28, 2026 and the sharing of ထမနဲ and a community meal will occur on Sunday, March 1, 2026. Please message us directly for details at: [email protected], (Instagram), or (Facebook Messenger).

On Union Day, we ask ourselves, what does “union” look, feel, taste, or sound like? Does union exist because it has been named? Whose version of union are we following? Is union one thing or many? What is like to be in the practice of union, of being and learning alongside each other?

Union Day highlights a pivotal moment when Burma/Myanmar became the “union” that we now know it as today. It is evidence that how we know each other and the places we call “home” has always been changing. It is when we move beyond the names that have been applied to us that we witness the expansiveness of ourselves, and where we experience the power in our differences.

We’ve asked four anonymous people what Union Day means for them, and we invite you to consider what this holiday evokes for you and your loved ones. What does this holiday mean for people of different generations and who have lived in different parts of the world?

As an artist has said, remember, the only thing more powerful than hate is love 🐰💛💚❤️
