Classes at The University of Alabama might be out for the year, but we still have students, faculty and staff who are showing up for Selma!

This past Friday, we hosted our first Ripple Trip of the summer. Our faculty and staff, joined by students in the University Fellows Experience, gathered to help at the Selma Area Food Bank. We were able to participate in a food giveaway and also pack some more boxes to prepare for the next one. We then listened to a very insightful presentation from Director Ryan Johnson about food insecurity in the Black Belt.

Afterwards, we enjoyed some amazing lunch from AC Reeves at the 5 & Dime. During lunch, we were joined by our friends from the Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Information to launch our 3D interactive map of downtown Selma, just in time for our group to use it to explore the area!

Finally, we wrapped up our day with a visit to Selma Roots, a thrift store that uses its proceeds to continue to fight food insecurity in the region. It was a great full-circle moment.

We continue to be so grateful to our community partners who give us the opportunity to give back and !

This past Friday, we were able to officially launch our interactive map of downtown Selma in partnership with Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Information! This map not only serves as a tool for navigating the downtown area and Old Cahawba, it also gives you an opportunity to learn more about the historic sites that make Selma so special. Our students, faculty and staff had a great time exploring!

What a fantastic day at The University of Alabama with students from Keith High School!

This talented group of journalism students had the chance to explore the UA College of Communication and Information Sciences and the Digital Media Center, followed by a campus tour led by our incredible Capstone Men and Women. We wrapped up the day with a great lunch at Fresh Food Company.

A big thank you to Mrs. Foster and Cindy Fisher with Black Belt News Network for making this visit possible!

Visits like these give students a chance to see what’s possible, build confidence, and start imagining a future that includes higher education. It was so fun watching them practice hosting their own talk shows at the desk of The Kalen DeBoer Show, delivering weather updates on WVUA 23, and exploring campus (even in the rain!).

We’re proud to be part of creating opportunities like this and look forward to continuing to welcome students to campus!

Big things are happening for Selma’s small business community!

We’re proud to celebrate our entrepreneurs who recently participated in the Entrepreneurship, Growth & Strategy Certificate Program hosted at the EDGE in Tuscaloosa. This program brought together small business owners from Selma and Tuscaloosa to strengthen their pitching skills, develop their strategies for growth, and receive one-on-one coaching from experts in entrepreneurship.

Opportunities like this are an investment in Selma’s future. When our entrepreneurs grow, our community grows with them.

Thank you to the team at the Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute and students from The Blackburn Institute at The University of Alabama for making this a great partnership. We cannot wait to see what these entrepreneurs accomplish next!

Little ripples make big waves 🌊

Last Wednesday, students from The University of Alabama traveled to Selma for our second Selma Ripple Trip of the Spring 2026 semester—and what an incredible day it was!

We kicked things off at the Selma Area Food Bank, where our students partnered with volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to pack 576 boxes totaling 20,736 pounds of food. These boxes will be distributed across Dallas and Marengo counties, helping fight food insecurity in Alabama’s Black Belt region. We are so grateful to Ryan Johnson, Executive Director of SAFB, for welcoming us and allowing our students to be part of this important work.

Next, we headed to Craig Field to clean up a stretch of Highway 80. Moments like these are a powerful reminder that small acts of service can make a big difference, and truly make Selma shine.

We also enjoyed a delicious lunch from Reflections Coffee Shoppe. Thank you to Sheryl Smedley for hosting us at the Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Information!

To wrap up the day, students explored downtown Selma, including a stop at Gallery 905, where they enjoyed the incredible local art on display.

Days like this showcase the heart of Selma and the impact of community partnerships. We love giving students the opportunity to experience all that this city has to offer, and we can’t wait to be back in the fall!

We were so excited to be able to wish Sheryl Smedley a very happy birthday! 🥳 Sheryl, thank you for everything you do in supporting our goal of building strong, meaningful partnerships in the Selma community. And thank you, Faith, for allowing us to be a part of the celebration!

Last week’s UA × Selma Luncheon was a powerful reminder of why this work matters. Bringing together university leadership, city leaders, and community partners to align around Selma’s future is always an honor. Centered on partnership, shared purpose, and the work ahead, the luncheon reflected our commitment to building on Selma’s historic legacy while intentionally shaping what comes next. Moments like these remind us what’s possible when institutions and communities move forward together.

Coming off winter break and kicking off the year by springing into service with the Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society.

We had a great day working in Selma’s Old Town neighborhood on several projects alongside 40+ students, faculty, and staff, followed by lunch from Valle Grande Mexican Grill, a visit to the YMCA, and time exploring Downtown Selma. We even made time for a special tour at Sturdivant Hall. Always grateful for Summerlin Hardware & Supply having what we need on our last-minute supply runs.
