Pulling Hindsight Forward — Part 1
The Leadership Reaction Course
At Officer Candidate School in the United States Marine Corps, we ran something called the Leadership Reaction Course.
Small teams. Difficult obstacle problems. Limited resources. Time pressure. Sleep deprivation. Physical exhaustion.
My understanding over time is that many of the problems weren’t truly designed to have perfect solutions. The real test was how you responded when uncertainty, fatigue, frustration, and pressure showed up all at once.
Could you keep thinking?
Could you adapt?
Could you lead anyway?
Years later, I think one of the biggest lessons was this:
Leadership is often less about having the perfect answer and more about resisting the urge to mentally shut down when conditions become difficult.
Sometimes progress starts with simply asking: “What now?”
