📖 A Brief Masonic History of The Builders by Joseph Fort Newton (MASONIC HISTORY)
The Builders: A Story and Study of Masonry was written by Brother Joseph Fort Newton, an influential Masonic author and former Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Iowa. First published in 1914 at the direction of the Grand Lodge of Iowa, the book was commissioned to provide a clear, approachable, and historically grounded introduction to the origins, development, philosophy, and symbolism of Freemasonry.
Brother Newton’s work traces the evolution of Freemasonry from its operative roots among medieval stonemasons through the formation of modern speculative Masonry, and presents the Craft’s ideals of brotherly love, morality, and service in eloquent and thoughtful prose. It quickly became one of the most widely read classic texts in Masonic literature.
For those of you who know, the Builders was officially adopted by the Grand Lodge of Iowa in 1914 with the intention that a copy be presented to *every candidate raised to the degree of Master Mason* within that Grand Jurisdiction. This practice reflected a desire to help newly raised Brethren understand the history and deeper purpose of the Craft beyond ritual alone, and tied into older Masonic traditions of presenting historical or educational texts to candidates.
While other jurisdictions have at times recommended or used the book in their educational programs, this presentation practice is rooted specifically in the Grand Lodge of Iowa’s early 20th-century educational efforts.
The Builders remains a beloved part of Masonic reading lists and libraries worldwide and continues to inspire Brothers to reflect on the heritage and principles of our Fraternity.
For those of you interested in this book, your local Masonic library should have copies. It’s also available for free on Apple Books 📚 I recommend this book to all new masons and all current master masons to either pick up for the first time or re-read again.
