After a long day listening to the full Tennessee House of Representatives, there’s finally some clarity.

House Bill 1959 — the Fair Rx Act — is scheduled for a vote on Monday, April 20, 2026.

This one matters.

It’s about restoring balance in a system that hasn’t been working for patients or the pharmacies trying to serve them. It’s about whether we continue allowing the same entities to act as both the referee and the player—or take a step toward a more level playing field.

Monday will be a long day.

Snacks will be packed.

But more importantly, so will the voices of pharmacists, patients, and advocates who know firsthand what’s at stake.

I’ve been a little quiet on here lately, and I wanted to share why.

Over the past several weeks, I’ve been pouring a lot of my time and energy into something that matters deeply to me—working alongside the Tennessee Pharmacists Association to advocate for PBM reform here in Tennessee.

At the center of this is the Fair Rx Act—a bill focused on restoring balance in the system by separating PBMs from owning pharmacies. It’s about making the system more transparent, more accountable, and ultimately protecting patient access to care.

For me, this ties directly to something I care deeply about: prescription affordability.

I spent over 20 years inside pharmacy. I’ve seen what patients go through when they can’t afford their medications. I’ve seen the pressure on pharmacists trying to navigate a system they don’t control. And I’ve seen how decisions made far upstream quietly shape what happens at the pharmacy counter.

At some point, you either accept it… or you decide to step forward.

I chose to step forward.

That’s meant testifying at the Capitol, speaking with legislators, and sharing my perspective through interviews with Fox17 and other media outlets—doing what I can to help bring awareness to what’s really happening and why it matters.

It’s also why I’ll be missing Medicarians this year. As much as I value that time and the people there, this bill is expected to move to a vote next week—and this is where I need to be.

This work matters. And I’m all in right now.

I’m proud to stand alongside the Tennessee Pharmacists Association in support of the Fair Rx Act here in Tennessee.

This legislation is about restoring balance in the pharmacy system by separating Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) from owning and operating pharmacies—ensuring they can no longer be both the referee and a player in the same game. At its core, it’s about protecting patient access, supporting independent pharmacies, and bringing greater fairness and transparency to how medications are priced and reimbursed.

I’ve had the opportunity to testify in support of this bill and to speak with FOX17 News and other local media outlets to share what I’ve seen firsthand inside the system.

This isn’t theoretical for me—it’s personal. And I will continue to advocate for a system that puts patients and access to care first.

Most people don’t know what a PBM is.

But they feel it every time they go to the pharmacy.

PBMs—Pharmacy Benefit Managers—sit between the patient, the pharmacy, and the insurance company.

They decide:
• what medications are covered
• what you pay
• which pharmacy you can use

That wasn’t always the case.

PBMs started as administrative processors.
Then they were asked to control costs.
Then they became embedded in Medicaid managed care.
Then came Medicare Part D in 2006—and they became central to the system.

Today, companies like CVS Health, through CVS Caremark, operate across multiple parts of that system.

That matters.
Because when one entity can influence coverage, pricing, and dispensing, it changes how decisions are made.

When I started my career, decisions about medications were made between the doctor, the patient, and the pharmacist.

Today, many of those decisions are made upstream—before the patient ever reaches the pharmacy.

The pharmacy is no longer where decisions are made.
It’s where those decisions are enforced.

If you’ve ever stood at the counter and thought,
“Why isn’t this covered?”
or
“Why does it cost this much?”

There’s a reason.

And it didn’t happen overnight.

For more than 20 years, I watched patients stand at the pharmacy counter and make impossible choices—between filling a prescription and paying for groceries, rent, or utilities.

I also watched pharmacists and care teams struggle to navigate a broken, fragmented system of coupons, foundations, assistance programs, and pricing rules that were never designed to be simple or patient-friendly.
