The planning program at Missouri State University is the only baccalaureate planning program in the state of Missouri accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning. The program is designed to meet the requirements of the professional planner with a strong emphasis on the actual practice of
planning. Two concentration options are available: Community and Regional Planning and Tourism Planning and Development. Students majoring in planning have opportunities for learning and social activities through membership in the Missouri Association of Planning Students (MAPS), the only student planning organization in Missouri. MAPS purpose includes the following objectives:
1. To advance the art and science of planning by encouraging student participation.
2. To encourage the exchange of information among student members.
3. To consider, to confer upon, and to make recommendations to the Missouri Chapter of APA (American Planning Association) and the National Student group of APA on matters concerning planning students.
4. To encourage fellow students.
5. To facilitate the individual participation of member students in APA. So, what do Planners do? Planners address diverse public issues affecting where people live, work and play; where they shop and receive health care; how they get from place to place; and what peoples’ communities look like. Planners evaluate and resolve opposing demands, offer alternative uses and resources and develop positive, constructive suggestions for improvement. Graduates in planning are prepared to work in local, state and federal planning organizations; real estate marketing and development; state and federal governmental agencies; and planning consulting firms. Graduates of the Missouri State Planning program are well prepared for graduate studies in planning, public administration, urban affairs or tourism studies. The Missouri State Planning program is one of only 14 undergraduate planning programs in the United States with full accreditation from the Planning Accreditation Board. Interested?
