โœจ Meet the Class Acts: Isabella Caffarelli ๐ŸŽ“

A senior majoring in applied mathematics and minoring in astrophysics, Isabella (Izzy) Caffarelli, is looking forward to a new research challenge after she graduates from WashU.

After years of studying black holes, she's pivoting to another complex computational task: helping brain scientists use advanced algorithms to sort and understand neurological data in a cleaner, more coherent way. She starts her new postbaccalaureate position with The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md., in July.

From the cosmos to cognition ๐Ÿ’ซ : Isabella Caffarelli of spent years analyzing X-rays from black holes, light that traveled for thousands or even millions of years before reaching us. This summer, she's starting a new research challenge at the National Institutes of Health, where she'll help brain scientists use advanced algorithms to make sense of complex neurological data. https://bit.ly/4ndoLYX

โœจ Meet the Class Acts: Noah Kabbaj ๐ŸŽ“

As a biology major in Arts & Sciences, he is on the front lines of research that is aimed at helping people overcome treatment-resistant mental health conditions, including severe depression. He works in the lab of Jordan McCall, an associate professor of anesthesiology at WashU Medicine.

"A central theme that Iโ€™ve tried to embody and follow in undergrad is that once I reach a certain place, I want to be able to turn around, reach back and help others reach that spot as well," Kabbaj said. "Iโ€™ve felt how valuable it is to have mentorship from people who get what itโ€™s like to not always belong. Thatโ€™s something that I look forward to continuing in science as well."

A middle school book report sparked a lifelong passion for understanding the brain.

Noah Kabbaj of is researching new ways to help people living with treatment-resistant depression and other serious mental health conditions.

From studying the science behind electroconvulsive therapy to mentoring the next generation of researchers, Kabbaj of WashU Arts & Sciences is driven by both discovery and the belief that once you make it, you reach back and help others do the same. https://bit.ly/49vsxHd

โœจ Meet the Class Acts: Cela Lopez ๐ŸŽ“

Arts & Sciences senior Cela Lopez is studying political science, so, of course, sheโ€™s interested in politics and policy. But what she really cares about is how we think about those topics.

During her time at WashU, Lopez has conducted a number of independent research projects that explore the intersection of psychology, culture, and politics.

"For me, it is really rooted in the idea of accessibility and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their level of education, can take something away from the work," Lopez said. "Research is not just for academia; itโ€™s for the world."

What truly shapes our political identity? How are our beliefs and actions influenced?

Cela Lopez of is exploring the answers and how psychology, culture, and everyday cues shape the way we see politics and each other. https://bit.ly/4tp7cGR
