Raphael Bostic, PhD ’95, made history as the first Black and first openly gay president of a regional Federal Reserve Bank. He retired in February after nearly nine years leading the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta as its 15th president.

Bostic’s career with the Federal Reserve began shortly after he earned his doctorate in economics from Stanford in 1995, when he joined the Federal Reserve Board of Governors as an economist. He later spent more than 15 years at the University of Southern California and served as assistant secretary for policy development and research at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

In 2017, Bostic returned to the Federal Reserve as president of the Atlanta Fed, overseeing the bank’s work across the Southeast and serving on the Federal Open Market Committee, the Federal Reserve’s monetary policymaking body.

Sabir Muhammad, ’98, made history in the pool. In Atlanta, he worked to bring more people into it. ❤️🌲

A 25-time All-American at Stanford Men's Swimming and Diving and two-time world championship medalist, Muhammad became the first African American swimmer to win a medal at a major international swimming competition.

In 2003, Muhammad helped launch a learn-to-swim program with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. The program later became a pilot for USA Swimming's Make a Splash initiative, which works to increase access to swimming lessons and water safety education.

Megan Calfas, ’18, MA ’20, and Carly Steyer, ’20, are the co-directors and co-producers of Crushing, a live storytelling show exploring the messy, complicated, and deeply human experience of romantic love, onstage Sept. 10–12 at American Conservatory Theater's Strand Theater. Now in its third run, Crushing has grown from sold-out shows in New York and San Francisco to a partnership with A.C.T. Across its three runs, the show’s casts and creative teams have included ten Stanford alumni. The show is executive produced by actress Rosario Dawson.

For Megan, an English major who graduated with Honors in the Arts, and Carly, who studied film with a focus on screenwriting, the show builds on creative paths and relationships that began on the Farm.

“Stanford gave us the diverse and fiercely talented peer group who co-direct, star in, design, embolden, and enrich this project,” Carly said. “This show really began with myself, Megan, and our co-creator Natachi Onwuamaegbu (‘22). We share work ethic and vision, a willingness to weather the late nights and long hours, and we want to laugh as we do it. All of that was built on friendships that started back in college.”

Megan sees a little bit of Stanford in the way they make the show, too.

“Carly and I are both former Stanford Sierra Camp staff directors, and we often joke that putting on a show is just like running Camp,” she said. “It takes tenacity, teamwork, creativity, and trust.”

And the result has become bigger than the show itself.

“Every year after the show, our audience sticks around to keep talking and sharing stories of their own,” Megan said. “They tell us they feel a little more alive.”
