Calling all equine veterinarians! Tarleton State Animal Science is conducting a survey on Rhodococcus equi (R. equi) in foals—the leading cause of bacterial pneumonia in young horses, often resulting in severe lung abscessation and potentially fatal outcomes.

We’re seeking your clinical insights on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies. Your anonymous input will help guide future research and improve foal health outcomes.

Calling all those associated with breeding horses!

Rhodococcus equi (R. equi) is the leading cause of pneumonia in young foals, often striking early in life with lung abscesses, fever, and respiratory distress—and it can be fatal if missed.

We’re conducting a short, anonymous survey to better understand how this disease is managed in the field. Your insight will directly support improved prevention and outcomes.

🐐📊 ANSC 4313: Sheep and Goat Production has been hard at work in the labs! Students processed lambs and kids born that were born over spring break, weighing offspring, and gaining hands-on experience in herd health through FAMACHA scoring and f***l egg counts.

🧀🌮 They later brought production full circle, preparing and evaluating a variety of lamb and goat products—from shepherd’s pie and tacos to pasta dishes—while also taste-testing goat cheese and other dairy products.

🐑📝 Together, these interactive labs highlighted the full cycle of small ruminant production, from animal care to product utilization, showcasing the value of hands-on, experiential learning.

Students are hands-on in ANSC 4302: Dairy Cattle Production! 🐄🥛

Students worked through the full milking process—exploring milking systems, practicing proper milking routines, and conducting the California Mastitis Test (CMT) to evaluate udder health. Labs like these give students real-world skills essential to dairy management and animal care.

Check out our amazing student interns at the Austin Rodeo 👏🐮

They assisted with unloading trailers, steer classification, and keeping the show running smoothly. Through this, they gained valuable skills in teamwork, communication, and real-world problem solving. One intern said her favorite part was “interacting with exhibitors and their families while helping them.”

At Tarleton State, our faculty is dedicated to providing students with opportunities like these, because real-world, hands-on experience is essential in preparing the next generation of industry leaders. 💜
