Founded in 1965, DURP has been a leader in planning education for decades and shaped planning practice in a state internationally known for innovations in the areas of comprehensive planning, emergency management, land conservation, urban design, public health, and the transportation-land use nexus. Additionally, here at Florida State University, it's our mission to create a positive, respectful e

nvironment where people can feel comfortable openly sharing their thoughts, ideas and opinions. We carry that same mission over into the online world. We understand that not everyone will agree with everything that's said on our page, and that's alright! We will, however, take action against things that undermine our mission to be respectful of one another. If you use vulgar, racist, threatening, or otherwise inappropriate language, we'll take it down. If we determine your messaging to be spam (especially marketing yourself, a product, or a service), we'll take it down. We don't like to remove your posts, so please, Uphold the Garnet and Gold. Help keep this community a lively, friendly and positive environment for everyone!

Florida State University’s Department of Urban & Regional Planning (DURP) provides students with real-world experience through its Cooperative Internships Program, which allows master’s students to work in professional planning positions for both private and public sectors.

The program provides its students with a stipend and tuition waiver and is sponsored by a variety of public agencies and private firms, including Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency, the U.S. Forest Service, the State of Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, and several others.

Michael Duncan, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, praises the program for its innovative education and strong mentorship.

“Partnerships like this give our graduate students real advantages, with hands-on experience and mentorship that actually prepares them for their careers,” Dr. Duncan said. “It also sends a clear message to prospective students that we take their professional development seriously.”

Mazi Rhodes, AICP – a two-time FSU COSSPP alumnus (B.S. International Affairs ’20, Master of Science in Planning ’22) – is joining the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) this month as a Freight & Rail Planner.

As a Freight & Rail Planner with FDOT, Rhodes will analyze data, contribute to system plans, and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to support statewide multimodal freight and rail planning. He will help advance key projects, including the Freight Mobility and Trade Plan, the Rail System Plan, and the Strategic Intermodal System (SIS), through technical analysis and innovation.

“I’m excited to step into a role that allows me to work at the intersection of freight, rail, and statewide planning. The Department of Urban & Regional Planning celebrated a major milestone in its development with the celebration of its 60th anniversary from March 27th through the 28th, honoring the alumni, faculty, staff, and students who have contributed to its longstanding success.

For 60 years, DURP has trained generations of professional planners and stands as Florida’s oldest planning program, with graduates working across the private, public, and nonprofit sectors in more than 40 states and two dozen countries.

The department commemorated this milestone with a two-day celebration beginning with a programming event at the William Johnston Building. The event featured a talk by Bruce Stiftel, a past professor, chairperson, and associate dean of graduate studies with DURP, focusing on how the department has developed over the last 60 years.

Afterward, the three newest faculty members, Aurora Echavarria, Mehak Sachdeva, and Fariba Siddiq, held a panel discussion with Dean Tim Chapin, sharing their perspectives on the planning profession and its impact on the future.
