Last night, Delta's Jeff VandeZande was joined by poets Jim Daniels and Ken Meisel at in Saginaw for an evening of fiction and poetry. It was a packed house. The writing was transportive, the venue was cool, and the vibes, as the kids say, were peak.

Before the festivities.

There was too much talking, eating drinking, and laughing later to remember to take a picture, but this is the lovely setup that .resort prepared for us this afternoon as members of Delta's English discipline gathered to spend time together before the end of the semester.

Amid all the stress and effort of work, it's wonderful to be reminded that you have smart, funny, thoughtful, insightful colleagues.

All kinds of cool, literary events happening in the area within the next few weeks.

On Wednesday, April 15 at noon, author Curtis Chin will read from his memoir, Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant in Delta's lecture theater.

It's free and open to the public, do come be part of this very cool event!

Today, the charter members of Delta's newly reactivated chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta met for the first time.

SKD is the National English Honors Society for Two-Year Schools and has been around for thirty years.

These ambitious Delta students gathered to plan ways to promote reading, writing, literacy, and literature across campus. Be on the lookout for exciting plans coming during the remainder of winter semester and again next year.

Welcome to week 3 of the winter semester here at Delta College. Delta's English discipline hopes everyone stays warm and dry, and chooses to drive carefully on slick roads. It's a small world and we need to take care of each other when it is icy outside.

The Delta College WRIT Center, originally created by members of the English discipline, is one of the greatest resources we have on campus. Every student can benefit from getting smart, incisive, compassionate help from the writing consultants.

It's a free service for all Delta College students, and the consultants are available in person, by email, or via Zoom. They work very hard to be available and flexible.

If you are writing anything for Delta College, you should visit the WRIT on a regular basis.

Whether it's helping students to interpret their instructor's assignment guidelines, talk through ideas for a discussion board prompt, integrate outside sources to support an argument, or review a final paper, the WRIT Center's available for writing and reading support! Don't wing it alone; waddle in or make an appointment!

Arts and Letters secured campus-wide dominion in the world of gingerbread houses! It's possible having artists and scuptors in the division helps in a competition like this, I guess.

Meet our faculty!

Jennifer Niester-Mika has been teaching at Delta College since 2008 and previously taught at Central Michigan University, Saginaw Valley State University, and Mott Community College.

She enjoys teaching every level of writing – from beginner to advanced – as well as short story literature. Her educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Michigan State University, a creative writing master’s degree from Central Michigan University, and a doctorate in English from Wayne State University.

When she’s not teaching, reading, or writing, she enjoys raising two teenagers, wandering the outdoors with her golden retriever, and starting and sometimes completing various art and home projects.
