Congratulations to Center faculty Dr. Rachel Gisewhite, who with co-authors Dr. Stacey Britton, Dr. Anne Gatling, and Dr. Samantha Brady (then a PhD student on the project), published the chapter "Beyond the Lab Coat: Expanding Perspectives in STEM Education Through the Draw a Scientist Test (DAST)" in the book, Collaboration to Advance Science & Mathematics Education. Congratulations to the new Center doctor in the house! With friends, family, and colleagues in attendance, current Mississippi University for Women/soon to be Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College biology professor Dr. Samantha Brady successfully defended her dissertation “Sound as Indicator and Agent of Change in the Anthropocene,” the final step on her pathway .

: Everything was coming up roses at the 2024 Center STEM Carnival as Professor Ken Rhinehart promoted restoration of the rose garden he loves.

Things are still rosy for the retired Rhinehart as he just officially earned Emeritus status from the university. We love this because even though he’s made it and beyond, it means he will always be a part of Team !

The Center sponsored a family day at the Mississippi Aquarium so that colleagues and students could together visit Toxic Beauty, the USM School of Ocean Science and Engineering marine trash art installation dedicated to the memory of Dr. Maria Wallace and housed in one of the informal learning spaces that she loved. The Mississippi Aquarium will show Toxic Beaty through the summer—don’t miss it!

Family, friends, colleagues, and students of Dr. Maria Ferris-Greene Wallace met near dawn at the Crosby Arboretum in Picayune this weekend to memorialize Maria’s wildflower spirit by sharing stories about her life, love, and accomplishments. The celebration of life ceremony concluded with a butterfly release as a reminder for all to follow her lead and always find ways to flourish. Visitors to the park can donate to the upkeep of the bench installed in her memory by her family.
