Calling all parents of children with autism:

Here is a great opportunity for parents to learn about the transition to adulthood process for their child with autism. If your child is between the ages of 3-22 and has autism OR displays similar characteristics on the autism spectrum, you may qualify to participate. While the content is most helpful for parents of youth ages 12-22, even if your child is younger, you will still learn helpful information.

In this online webinar workshop, the presenters will walk you through the big picture of the transition to adulthood process and the specific details to create postsecondary goals for your child. This webinar will also include materials and resources to assist you in actively participating throughout the webinar. There is not a specific date for the webinar; the webinar is “on-demand” so you will be able to listen when it is convenient for you. We will continue to accept registrations until April 2019. At the start of each month we will launch a new cohort of parents to participate (Nov, Dec, Jan, etc) .

After completing the registration below, we will be back in touch at the start of the new month with next steps on how to participate.

Greetings!

Project SKILLS is offering a FREE parent training program for parents/caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The project focuses on teaching language intervention strategies to parents and building play and language skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Parents will participate in group and individual sessions for 8 weeks (attending 1 session per week). The project conducts 1 opening group session that will last approximately 2-hours and each individual session will last 1-hour. During the opening session, they meet with all enrolled parents as a group (parents only) and go over introductory information about the parent training we offer for facilitating play/language growth. The subsequent seven individual sessions, tailored to each family, involve 1-2 graduate student clinicians, the participating parent, and child to cover detailed lectures, demonstrations, and coaching over these specific skills. This training is offered in-person at the UT Speech and Hearing Center in Austin or via video conferencing.

To register for this program, please fill out the attached 10-15 minute long scheduling survey.

Only 2 opportunities left to take part in our FREE PARENT TRAINING COURSE at UT Austin!!! Our next session is starting March 19th and the last one starting June 4th. Don’t miss out!

Register now for the next session at: https://utexas.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3DG8ZDZQyQor0Jn

Project SKILLS offers you and your child (up to age 10) two months of free individualized intervention at the UT Speech and Hearing Center. Parents work with UT clinical faculty and graduate clinicians to learn techniques to facilitate interaction, language, and play.

The course will utilize the parent training curriculum developed by Ingersoll & Dvortcsak (2010). This curriculum teaches parents to use a combination of developmental and behavioral strategies to increase their children’s social communication skills. Guiding principles of this intervention include: (1) Intervention is naturalistic, (2) Typical development is used to guide selection of treatment targets, and (3) children learn social communication through interaction with responsive caregivers.
Families will participate in group and individual sessions for 8 weeks (attending 1 session per week). We conduct 1 opening group session that will last approximately 2-hours and each individual session will last 1-hour. During the opening session, we meet with all enrolled parents in small groups (parents only) and go over introductory information. The subsequent seven individual sessions, tailored to each family, involve 1-2 graduate student clinicians, the participating parent, and child to cover detailed lecture, demonstration, and coaching over these specific skills.

Don’t have a lot of time? It’s only a one hour per week commitment to meet directly with us at UT for the 8 weeks. Typically, this is the same time each week. We have many afterschool timeslots to help meet your schedule. Then, you can implement the techniques at home at any time that works for you.

Can’t make it to UT campus? No problem! We can video conference with you using our secure software! All you need is a computer with we**am, iPad, tablet, or smart phone! We can even help you with that if you need to borrow one. Any family in Texas is eligible for this training course. We also provide services in Spanish and several other languages.
If you are interested in enrolling in our next session, please click on the following link to our scheduling survey for our next session starting in March:

https://utexas.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3DG8ZDZQyQor0Jn

You’ll pick a time to attend our opening group session (week 1) and then your top 3 choices for times for your individual sessions with your child (weeks 2-8). Once you complete the survey, you are officially registered. We will confirm your individual time before you start in March.

LOOKING: 9 to 13-month-old infants who have a sibling with OR without Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Infants and their mothers are needed for a longitudinal study examining how social development unfolds over time and how this development differs for those infants with versus without an older sibling with ASD.

Infants will participate in developmental assessments and play-based interactions with our researchers during four visits over their second year of life (1.5-2 hours each). Mothers will also be asked to complete several questionnaires, and older siblings with autism will participant in a one-hour standardized diagnostic assessment for autism.

$20-$30 compensation per visit, free parking, and written feedback from the older sibling’s assessment will be provided (if applicable). In addition, infants will be closely monitored for signs of autism, and parents will be notified of clinical concerns related to autism and referred for appropriate services in the community.
