After the Civil War, “decoration days” saw families honor the graves of their fallen with flowers. In 1868, a Union veterans organization proclaimed a "memorial day" for a coordinated Decoration Day at Arlington, VA. May was chosen for the best, earliest selection of blooming flowers. After WWI, the day was expanded to honor those in the military who died in all American wars. In the late 1960s, state observances were officially recognized on a federal level, making it a national holiday on the last Monday in May.

The use of poppies as a memorial symbol is inspired by the poem, “In Flanders Fields.” https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/47380/in-flanders-fields

Sigma Alpha Iota honors those who have given their lives in service.

Several alumnae chapter reports are due on the Officer Portal on June 1. Details are available on those forms.
