Illinois Robotics in Space at UIUC

Illinois Robotics in Space at UIUC Do you like robots? Do you like them even more when they're launched into space?? SO DO WE. Check out our website at http://iris.ae.illinois.edu!

Illinois Robotics in Space (IRIS) is an RSO at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and every year we submit a robot to the NASA Lunabotics Mining Competition, work on smaller robotics-related projects and teach younger students at our local schools about what we do. We're a bunch of people who like building and programming robots.

IRIS held its first Design Review of the semester today to discuss our team's progress.
We're pleased to announce that following our developments from the past months, we are happy to start manufacturing our 2022 robot!

If interested in IRIS and want to be notified of our future large events, please add yourself to IRIS on CampusGroups, or add yourself to the slack: https://join.slack.com/t/iris-uiuc/shared_invite/zt-5rmpb5uq-KJRGSYM95oFr_c~Pg_Qu1Q

Another COVID-19 Update:

-We will not have anymore in person meetings for the rest of the semester

-We will not be attending the competition this year, though if NASA decides to host an online version of the competition to look through our papers, we will submit those

-IRIS will continue to do lots of CAD and Design

-The team leads will be hosting video calls with their teams in the near future

We appreciate all of the work you guys have done through the semester, and we hope that we can keep as much of it going as possible. Thank you guys so much for everything that you have done and continue to do.

COVID-19 Update:

-IRIS in-person meetings are suspended for the time being as classes move online and the OpenLab is closed.

- We will keep you updated, but teams will continue to work over slack and through video calls. Please look for messages from your team leads.

-The system paper is still due at the beginning of April, so we must finish that.

-There are conversations occurring about the status of the competition, but as of right now we don’t know if we will be able to attend and if it will still happen.

-Look for an official email from our president, Victoria Jiron, if it does get canceled.

Stay safe and healthy while not getting those at risk sick. Feel free to reach out with other questions.

Meet the Board: Elizabeth Karlovics, Social Media Chair

About Elizabeth:
"I joined IRIS because I have a huge interest in space, and space exploration. IRIS seemed like a good fit!

Whenever I am down, taking care of my plants or my bird tends to cheer me up. I feel like it's something about having something around you that relies on your care and presence that makes me feel wanted and loved no matter how down I am feeling.

I have been in love with the movie Waking Life as of lately. It is a philosophy documentary directed by Richard Linklater. I really enjoy it because it goes through explores topics such as the nature of reality, dreams and lucid dreams, consciousness, the meaning of life, free will, and existentialism, with some of the coolest animation I have seen in a movie.

One of my funniest childhood memories is from when I was at my aunt's house when I was five years old. I wanted to save this dime I saw on the table, so I decided to shove it up my nose- it took around 2 hours to get the dime out of my nose.

Outside of IRIS, I am apart of the Fashion Network, a fashion publication on campus. For them, I work as makeup artist, model, and photographer. I also do Jiu Jitsu!

Meet the Board: Jake Nickel, Electrical Team Lead

About Jake:
"I found IRIS at Quad Day and thought they would be interesting to give a try, and decided to show up to the first meeting.

One of the things I miss the most from childhood is the world being a much smaller place. Now that myself and those around me are more spread out across the country, it becomes much harder to make connections and meet old friends as easily.

The movie I always answer with when asked which is my favorite is the Christopher Nolan science fiction epic Interstellar. It is just so rewatchable, makes sense, and has a killer soundtrack to go with it.

One of my favorite hobbies outside of IRIS is drone photography, as it gives you the opportunity to see the world from a new and interesting perspective, one that not many have the chance to experience. "
