General information

I started making pots at Indiana University in 1991, as part of a requirement for a degree in Fine Arts/Graphic Design. I fell in love with clay instantly - the whole process of making and firing. And I quickly became interested in the effects of atmospheric firing after a few tries at the university's salt-fired kiln. After graduation, I moved to Chicago and took a design job at an advertising agency. But I continued working in clay, taking classes at Lillstreet Art Center, which is where I discovered soda firing. More than fifteen years later, I left the corporate world to focus on clay full-time. I enjoy the challenge of balancing the technical and the artistic, the rustic and the refined, while maintaining the mark of human hands. Recently, I've been exploring the transfer of images onto clay, a process that combines my love of graphic design and typography with my love of pottery. I divide my time as a freelance designer and pottery teacher with making and refining my work in the studio.
