Howard University is now the first historically Black university to have an intercollegiate figure skating team. The team was founded by Maya James and Cheyenne Walker, two Howard University students who both had a passion for figure skating since childhood. After an initial connection on Instagram, the two worked together to create a team constitution, budget, and schedule in order to be approved by Howard and U.S. Figure Skating. This process took a full semester, but in the summer of 2023, the team was officially formed. Maya is the president and Cheyenne is the vice president, and the team will take part in their debut competition at the University of Delaware in February 2024.
