Statement from Donta Gonzalez, President, LULAC Young Professionals DC.

Nine Minutes and 29 Seconds... that is the amount of time that a knee was placed on a mans neck...

Its only been two weeks since we first saw 2nd Lt. Nazario being pepper sprayed..

As I breathe a sigh of relief on the verdict, I know this is only the beginning. As a Black and Latinx man I know my personal fears toward law enforcement and the justice system. Far too many times officers have been acquitted for murdering innocent black and brown men.

Police Officers across the country are to be held accountable. We have too many officers wearing a badge that do not deserve it. I pray that this is a springboard toward policy changes.

President Biden and Congress need to be lead on accountability and take steps forward to change. I STRONGLY urge the George Floyd Justice In Policing Act be reintroduced, passed, and signed into law...

We need it NOW!

Statement from LULAC District of Columbia State Director on the Chauvin Verdict

LULAC District of Columbia would like to thank the Minneapolis jurors for convicting Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd. Nine minutes and 29 seconds of a knee on a man’s neck was never about public safety, but about white supremacy, unlawful police aggression, and ego. Chauvin brought disgrace to his profession and drove a deeper divide between minority communities and law enforcement. We will spend years trying to undo the damage caused by this cruel act. I hope the verdict allows those affected to begin healing. I hope this decision sends a clear message that police should never act as judge, jury and executioner. Lastly, thank you to all who marched and continue to march to ensure justice is served.

State Director

LULAC Young Professionals Council Executive Board statement on Incidents In Virginia and Minnesota

With the racist mistreatment of 2nd Lt. Caron Nazario and tragic death of Daunte Wright - both at the hands of police officers - the past 72+ hours have left us numb, but unfortunately these circumstances have become all too familiar in our society. Our executive board is compelled to condemn, and speak out against these horrifying acts of unnecessary violence and negligent behavior that once again led to tragedies.

These tragedies against Black and Latinx men and our communities are abusive and disturbing and we as a council demand, yet again, transparency and reform. This cannot be the behavior of supposed peacekeepers.

This board fully believes that 2nd Lt. Caron Nazario & Daunte Wright’s lives matter!

Black Lives Matter. Always.

We invite other councils to join in solidarity with the Nazario and Wright family.
