Our Story
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater FALL HORN FESTIVAL started in 1999. UW-W faculty hornists Linda Kimball and Mary Buscanics-Jones wanted to offer an educational, inspiring, and fun event for young hornists. “Mary and I found that the horn was becoming an endangered species in many school districts; often these kids were the only horn player in their band - we wanted to provide a group experience for young hornists to enjoy the camaraderie and fun of playing in a horn ensemble.”
Each year, the FALL HORN FESTIVAL has focused on a different theme, offering an opportunity to explore difference styles of music, and a variety of horn issues. The Fall Horn Fiesta of 2003 featured music from “South of the Border.” 2006 was “Mozart-Mania!” Fall Horn Festival 2009 - a truly moooooving experience” offered an opportunity to take a long look back to the ancient ancestors of the horn - cow horns, bone horns, and conch shells. In 2011, the “Jazz-tastic Horn” explored the horn’s place in the jazz world, and in 2016 our “French R-evolution” theme gave us a chance to find out if the “French” horn is really French!... Other fun themes have included: Horns Go Hollywood, Horn Superhereos, Holiday Hornaments, Horns Go Global, The Intergalactic Horn, and Horns Go Halloween - so much fun, it’s scary!
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the festival, we added an ensemble for adults to encourage band directors to come hone their horn skills, and for “mature” or amateur hornists to come and join the fun. Due to it’s popularity, we continue to offer the adult choir option.
Hornist of all ages and skill levels are welcome to share in this day of horn playing. Play with the large ensemble of over 100 horns, and in a smaller, experience-based ensemble playing even more music tailored to your skill level.
