Wichita State University College of Applied Studies

Wichita State University College of Applied Studies Experience is everything in WSU’s College of Applied Studies. That’s why field experience is a vital part of every student’s program of study.

The college offers majors in a variety of areas relating to human development across the lifespan – teaching, counseling, educational leadership, athletic training, exercise science, sport management and more. Teacher education majors get extensive hands-on experience in Kansas’ largest, most diverse school district throughout their program, well in advance of their final student teaching placemen

ts. Students in other majors gain field experience in other education settings, conduct research in WSU's state-of-the-art Human Performance Laboratory, or intern with the top sport organizations in the country. Such experience, combined with a solid foundation of knowledge gained in the classroom, positions College of Education graduates for success in their chosen professions.

CAS faculty and staff Drs. Lyndsey Brown, Christie Henderson, Jill Wood, and Kimberly Moody led the first annual SELebration Conference 🌸🌴🌺—a day centered on social-emotional learning, connection, and community.

With 20 breakout sessions, an engaging keynote from Hanna Kemble-Mick - National School Counselor of the year finalist, and over $500 in giveaways, attendees left inspired and ready to implement new strategies in their schools.

“SELebration was more than a conference. It was a powerful reminder of why we do this work. And we couldn’t be prouder of what we created.” – Dr. Lyndsey Brown

Special thanks to Maize USD 266, Project Teacher, Le Luci Lighting and Design, Hope Bunker, and Credit Union of America for making the event possible.

Wichita State sport management student Liam Crawford gained hands-on experience working behind the scenes at the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in Wichita.

As a media host relations assistant, Liam supported media operations, technology, and game-day logistics — connecting what he’s learned in the classroom to real-world practice.

“My whole vision of sports has changed,” Crawford said. “When I sit down and look at any sporting event, I see more than just the game—I see the behind-the-scenes and what coordinators are doing just to put on that sporting event.”
