🎭 From costume design to social media, Wichita State performing arts students are gaining paid, hands-on experience while helping bring productions to life at Wilner Auditorium.

Thanks to State of Kansas Applied Learning Funds, 23 students are earning money in career-focused roles like lighting, fundraising, audience research and more — all while pursuing their degrees.

Junior Mia Dennett said the paid opportunity allows her to focus on school and building her career, without having to take unrelated jobs just to make ends meet.

Dr. Michael Birzer built a distinguished law enforcement career before finding his true calling in research and education. Since joining Wichita State in 2004, Birzer has become a leading voice in racial profiling research and evidence-based policing — shaping training across Kansas and beyond.

Today, as director of the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Hub (UReCA), he’s focused on creating opportunities for students to engage in hands-on, interdisciplinary research that sparks critical thinking and real-world problem solving.

Lauren’s path from Wichita State to NASA shows what’s possible when education meets opportunity. As an engineering student, she was handed meaningful work on day one, contributing to projects for the International Space Station and Artemis missions.

Former Wichita State golfers Corey Novascone and Calvin Pearson are giving back to the game that helped shape their college journeys. Both credit golf with opening doors to higher education and teaching valuable life lessons.

Now, they're leaders at First Tee Greater Wichita, which opened the Steve Hatchett Learning Center at MacDonald Golf Course as part of a $3 million complex. The facility includes a driving range, putting and chipping area and indoor/outdoor spaces for both golf instruction and academic support.
