Last Tuesday, Seniors: Jayden and Jessica, Sophomore’s: Elaine and Kenzie, and Professor Nick B***e represented WC at Ohio’s Social Work Advocacy Day.

Advocacy Day is a fantastic opportunity for social work students at any level across the state. It provides networking opportunities and strengthens macro practice social work. This years topics focused on funding for students pursuing a MSW at specific universities (HB 797), expanding criminal liability in relation to drug charges (HB 88), and the use of AI in therapy services (HB 525).

This year, Advocacy Day was also the day Nick B***e learned the Wilmington College hand sign🤍💚

Introducing your current Social Work Student Ambassadors✨

Jayden Clark: Senior majoring in Social Work with a minor in Sociology. Jayden currently represents WC in Greene County as a victim advocate intern. During her time at WC, she has taken a variety of criminal justice and psychology courses, which have helped guide her to the field of Forensic Social Work. In the future, she hopes to continue her work as a Victim Advocate. When she’s not in class or at her field placement, Jayden helps coach baseball, enjoys all things drawing and painting, and spending time with her adorable dogs⚾️✍🏼🐾

Jessica Crutchleo: Senior majoring in Social Work with a minor in Sociology. Jessica currently represents WC in Warren County as a middle school mental health intern. During her time at WC, she has taken a variety of Criminal Justice classes and has an interest in Forensic Social Work, specifically within women’s correctional institutions. In the future, she hopes to work as a school social worker at her old high school. When she’s not in class or at her field placement, Jessica enjoys reading, doing her nails, and hanging out with friends and family📚💅🏼🫶🏼

Meet Your Social Work Dream Team at Wilmington College ✨

At Wilmington College, our Social Work program is powered by two full-time faculty who are passionate about students, justice, and real-world impact.

Nick B***e: Director of the BSW Program & Assistant Professor of Social Work. Nick brings experience from school social work, policy advocacy, and holistic body–mind–spirit practice. Before Wilmington, he served as a program chair at Cincinnati State and began his career supporting students and families in Cincinnati Public Schools. When he’s not teaching, you’ll find him traveling, running, hiking, biking, discovering new coffee shops, and championing sustainable living (yes, he’s serious about composting ♻️).

Laura Mishne Heller: Director of Field Education & Assistant Professor of Social Work. Laura is a Licensed Independent Social Worker whose work connects social work, criminal justice, and public health — especially in carceral settings. She collaborates with justice reform initiatives, the Ohio Innocence Project, and decarceral research efforts. Outside the classroom, she volunteers, strength coaches at NYXX Cycle + Strength, and proudly cheers on Cleveland sports teams.

Together, Nick and Laura are committed to preparing future social workers who lead with ethics, empathy, and action.
