GEAR UP Alabama Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a competitive grant program of the U.S.

Department of Education that increases the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education The U.S Department of Education's Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant provides funding to states to enhance services for students, parents and teachers at high-poverty middle school and high schools to increase the nu

mber of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. The seven-year $49 million grant, awarded to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, serves 9,300 students in 21 school districts within Alabama's Black Belt Region. GEAR UP Alabama is facilitated by the UAB school of Education and supported by in-state and out of-state project partners.

All good things must come to an end, including GEAR UP Alabama. After eight years of serving the high school classes of 2020 and 2021 at various high schools in the Alabama Black Belt, due to federal grant guidelines, GUA is coming to an end on September 24, 2022.

This means that formal GUA programming is over later this month, but your GEAR UP Alabama family will always be here for you. From your site facilitators and regional coordinators to your graduation coaches and program director, while we will no longer be employed by GUA, we’re still here, we love you, and we will support you in whatever way we’re able.

We’ve got a few more weeks on the GUA clock, so stick around to see resources, memories, and more. Let us know if there’s anything you want or need in the mean time and thanks for sticking around and supporting us for all these years.
