This week first-year students applied their roofing skills. Drip edge, ice and water shield along the eaves, underlayment, and architectural style asphalt shingles. Water tight!

Shed #5 framed up! 2x6 rafters, 24” on-center with a 5/12 slope, Advantech roof sheathing. Last set of class before break!

Students in Building Concepts 2 use a”deadman” to support the ridge during rafter installation. They calculate the height of the deadman by adding the total rise of the rafter and the heel height above the birdsmouth, then subtract the width of the ridge. Makes for a safer and more accurate procedure.

In our Program we consider roof framing a pinnacle skill in the first year of instruction. If a graduate can calculate, lay out, cut and install a roof frame they’ll get a pay raise week one of their new job.

Second year students in Interior Finish 1 are using routers to create a detail on a shelf project for their individual cubicle rooms. This student is routing a bead along the bottom edge of the shelf ledger. SLO-mo!

Students in our Interior Finish class are working on crown molding. This student uses a coping saw to cut along the profile of this open face miter. Can you cope?

Our first year students are nearing completion of their wall framing on the shed projects. Some students prefer to hand-bang nails, and others, like this student prefer a power nailer; in this case a Dewalt cordless framing gun. Wall sheathing requires 8d common nails every 6-inches along the edges and every 12-inches in the field.

Second year students working on a flooring unit. After they plane rough pine to thickness, joint an edge, and rip it to width, students dado both edges with a router—shown here—to accept a spline, similar to tongue and groove.

Q: How many BCT students does it take to tilt an 8x12 floor system on edge? A: As many as required to do it safely. Students fasten 4x4 pressure-treated skids to the underside of the floor system—ready for ground contact.

In last year’s Building Concepts 3 class, advanced students cut and erected a timberframe. An 8x12 frame with a 12/12 slope roof that made someone a very happy customer.

First-year students have started their 8x12 sheds. We’re currently teaching floor framing and subfloor installation. Two students team up to build the shed from start to finish….then we sell them (sheds, not students)!

In Building Concepts 1 today we are doing a batterboard exercise. Batterboards are used to lay out and locate the outside of foundation footings after the foundation hole has been excavated. This task reinforces squaring skills. Love that Pythagorean theorem!
