At our semi-annual Brownfields Community Update and Exhibit, community attendees were tasked with brainstorming ideas to reuse of potential brownfield sites across National City. Pictures of sites across National City, identified through GIS, were displayed on poster boards across the event center/ Participants then walked around, adding sticky notes with their ideas for each specific site. During the activity, participants contributed a wide range of innovative suggestions for specific sites, including the development of: event halls, supermarkets, community centers, trade schools, subsidized housing, youth centers, community gardens, and indoor sports arenas as top priorities for revitalizing the sites. Our event demonstrated the community’s deep commitment to transforming these brownfields into thriving spaces. The collective vision and creativity showcased in these recommendations underscore the power of community-driven revitalization, paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for National City. On August 22nd, we hosted our semi-annual Brownfields Community Update Assessment Project at the A Reason to Survive (ARTS) Center in National City. The event began with a presentation on the two grants SDSU received from the U.S. EPA and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, providing detailed insights into the funding. Following this, we discussed the Brownfields identification process and SDSU’s planned activities in more depth. Travis Stravasnik from EnSafe then presented on completed environmental site assessments, explaining the causes of specific site issues. Next, Chris Clark and Tatiana Perez from the Urban Land Institute presented on a technical assistance panel on the redevelopment potential of pre-selected brownfield sites across National City. We concluded the presentation with an open Q&A session and introduced our site input activity. Participants were invited to use sticky notes to brainstorm redevelopment ideas as they moved around seven zones displayed in the room. The remainder of the evening was spent brainstorming, enjoying the food and drinks, and socializing with the community.

* Learn about SDSU’s brownfield assessments grants from the US EPA and the California DTSC
* Receive updates on the community-guided brownfield site prioritization list and results of environmental site assessments of pre-selected brownfield sites
* Mingle through brownfields-related exhibits created and presented by National City youth and SDSU students

Snacks and refreshments will be provided. Coloring stations will be made available for children who attend.

What is a brownfield?
Generally, a brownfield is a piece of land that is abandoned or underused due in part to concerns about potential contamination.

Justfields: Elevate your Land Reuse Initiatives with New Environmental Justice Funding

Webinar Date: Thursday, March 7 | 11 a.m. PST

EPA’s Environmental and Climate Justice (ECJ) Program, created under the Inflation Reduction Act, will infuse a historic $3B investment into communities facing environmental justice concerns. The funding will help underserved and overburdened communities take action and implement initiatives that support the health, wellbeing, and resilience of their neighborhoods. Each of the new funding opportunities includes eligible activities that support land reuse and brownfields redevelopment.

Join this important conversation where we will articulate the intersections between brownfields funding and ECJ funding. Attendees will learn how to effectively leverage ECJ funding to support their communities’ revitalization initiatives and mitigate past environmental injustices. Speakers from EPA’s Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization (OBLR) and the Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights (OEJECR) will:

-Outline available and upcoming ECJ funding including the Community Change Grants and Thriving Communities EJ Subgrants;
- Spotlight eligible activities that are particularly relevant to land reuse;
- Identify CERCLA 104(k) and 128(a) limitations that can potentially be addressed with ECJ funding;
- And consider financial layering opportunities that maximize the potential of redevelopment initiatives and support project momentum.
