Remembering Evelio B. Javier

Today marks the 40th death anniversary of Evelio Bellaflor Javier, a statesman whose life became a symbol of courage and principled leadership during one of the most critical chapters in Philippine history.

As Governor of Antique, Javier stood firmly for democracy and clean governance at a time of deep political unrest. During the turbulent 1986 snap elections and the events leading to the EDSA People Power Revolution, he exemplified integrity, refusing to compromise his convictions despite threats and intimidation. His assassination on February 11, 1986, shocked the nation and further galvanized public resistance against authoritarian rule.

In recognition of his heroism and sacrifice, Republic Act No. 7610 declares February 11 as a special nonworking public holiday in the provinces of Antique, Capiz, Aklan, and Iloilo—a lasting tribute to his legacy in Panay and the nation.

Evelio Javier’s life reminds us that true public service demands bravery, moral clarity, and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals. His legacy continues to inspire generations of Filipinos to stand for justice and integrity in governance.

Let’s stay alert and take all necessary precautions. It’s important to prioritize safety and support one another through these challenging times, as bagyong Opong continues to affect our town and several other regions.
