The Army War College welcomed Wayne State University, Prof. Dr. Deane Aikens, on May 28. Aikens delivered a presentation to USAWC students titled, "What emotion regulation reveals about leadership and decision making." In stressful military and strategic environments, understanding how we process and manage emotions is vital. Aikens provided invaluable insights into how emotional intelligence and regulation directly impact effective leadership, team dynamics, and complex strategic choices.

USAWC students from seminar 13 wrapped up their staff ride to Washington, D.C., on May 14th with visits to the Hudson Institute and Lockheed Martin. Hudson’s Mr. Bryan Clark, Senior Fellow and Director of the Center for Defense Concepts and Technology, touched on autonomous systems, their challenges, and their uses across multiple domains. Retired Lt. Gen. Pat Donahue, VP for Army and Special Operations Forces Programs, led off the presentation at Lockheed Martin. Donahue touched on the challenges of a rapidly evolving security environment and the need to accelerate transformation to meet DoW’s strategy priorities.

On May 11, 2026, U.S. Army War College students from Seminar 18 visited the Jordanian Mission to the United Nations to gain firsthand insights into global diplomacy and international security operations. Mr. Walid Obeidat, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Jordan, welcomed the students. During the engagement, Mr. Obeidat discussed the critical, ongoing work of Jordan's UN mission. He took time to reflect on the long, proud tradition of the enduring relationship between Jordan and the United States. The engagement provides our future strategic leaders with the global perspective necessary to navigate complex security environments. A huge thank you to Mr. Obeidat and the entire Jordanian Mission team for their outstanding hospitality.

Students of the U.S. Army War College recently visited the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York City during their annual staff ride, May 11, 2026. We extend our sincere gratitude to H.E. Ambassador Yojna Patel for her hospitality and insightful conversation regarding the complexities and challenges facing the United Nations' reform in today's global landscape. Knowledge of the UN mission is vital for our future strategic leaders to understand the nuances of international diplomacy and multilateral partnerships.

Another successful year for the Great Decisions Lecture series has come to an end. Thanks to our local community for supporting this series every year. Dr. Darrell Driver wrapped up the lecture series with "Ruptured Alliances and the Risk of Nuclear Proliferation". Dr. Driver talked about U.S. history on nuclear proliferation policy, where the U.S. is currently, the decisions our allies and partners, along with our adversaries, are making, and the decisions the U.S. is making as well. Gen. Christopher C. LaNeve, vice chief of staff of the Army, presided over the ceremony, highlighted Rafferty's leadership as key to advancing the Army's space and missile defense operations, a domain of increasing strategic importance.

The USAWC International Fellows Continuing Education Program recently traveled to Vilnius, Lithuania bringing together U.S. and European USAWC alumni, the IFCEP program focused on the critical security challenges facing the Baltic region today. Participants tackled NATO priorities, deterrence, and interoperability in an era of great power competition. The week is also about reinforcing professional networks and lifelong friendships originally forged at Carlisle Barracks that strengthen our alliances. The USAWC would like our host, Lithuanian Chief of Defense Gen. Raimundas Vaiksnoras (USAWC '13), and retired Gen. Arvydas Pocius (USAWC '04) for their insights and hospitality.

Images of the cycling time trial and the criterium are up on Flickr. The time trial was held at the scenic climb up to the beautiful Kings Gap Environmental Education Center, and the face-paced criterium: raced right here around Carlisle Barracks. The Army teams won both cycling events.
