What is an essential needs hub?

As part of Temple University's commitment to student success, the Christopher and Julie Barnett Essential Needs Hub provides students with fundamental resources such as food, housing, financial stability, mental health resources, transportation, technology and more. Temple believes that students should not have to choose between their own well-being and their education, and the Essential Needs Hub team is here to provide that support.

This Friday, BCM&D Records releases Complications in Sue, the world premiere performance of the opera by Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning playwright Michael R. Jackson. In partnership with Opera Philadelphia, this recording was captured live at the Academy of Music in February 2026.

The opera features music by 10 composers as it unfolds in 10 vignettes, each set in a different decade in the life of the main character, Sue. The 10 composers include Andy Akiho, Alistair Coleman, Nathalie Joachim, Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, Rene Orth, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Kamala Sankaram, Dan Schlosberg, and Errollyn Wallen, whose scores range from the mundane to the extraordinary.

Complications in Sue will be available for streaming and download on all digital platforms, with CDs available on Bandcamp.

Introducing Dr. Mark Micchelli, our new assistant professor of music theory and composition!

Micchelli is a pianist, composer, scholar, and educator. He holds a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was the first graduate to earn a combined degree in composition/theory and jazz studies. Micchelli's music has been described as "jazz that knows the rules but gets weird with them" (KALW), as demonstrated through his recent albums, Glitched-On Bop (2025), featuring jazz standards reimagined for solo piano and improvising computer, and Five Years in Exile (2026), featuring an eclectic mix of art song, jazz, punk, and noise. He is also the producer and music director for Mai Khôi's Bad Activist, a multimedia theatrical performance.

As a music theorist and pedagogue, Micchelli challenges the siloing of composition, performance and research, instead exploring creative practice as a mode of music-theoretical inquiry. This approach has guided his publications on the solo piano music of Cecil Taylor, which have appeared in Music Theory Online and SMT-Pod, and for which he was the recipient of a 2023 SMT Emerging Scholar Award. His current research suggests broader applications for composer/theorist George Russell's landmark treatise, The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization.

Welcome to Boyer, Dr. Micchelli!
