【時事委員會及大學事務委員會委員招募 | Recruitment of Committee Members - Current Affairs Committee and University Affairs Committee】

香港大學學生會評議會時事委員會及大學事務委員會即將於本年度第一次評議會常務會議委任新一屆委員，我們希望招募有興趣的同學加入，一展抱負。

時事委員會的主要工作為透過舉辦或參與不同的活動，例如街站、遊行、論壇、展覽等等，向會員推廣時事及提升社會意識，推動校內的時政討論氣氛。另外，時委會更會就不同時事議題發出聲明，讓同學與社會了解學生會之立場。

大學事務委員會將負責討論大學為學生提供之福利，定期與不同大學管治委員會之學生代表溝通及向同學發放相關資訊﹑大學學術發展策略﹑舍堂發展方向及發展非住宿學院設施。同時，大學事務委員會亦將就大學事務發表聲明或作出相應行動，及將就不同校園配套檢討並向校方反映意見。

時事委員會及大學事務委員會分別設有八名和七名的學生會基本會員議席，我們歡迎學生會所有基本會員競逐席位，並邀請有意加入的同學出席茶聚，以了解委員會的架構及工作，詳情如下：

Since the Current Affairs Committee and University Affairs Committee will appoint new committee members in the first Ordinary Union Council Meeting, we hope to recruit students who are interested in joining the committees and share our aspirations.

The Current Affairs Committee (CAC) will be mainly responsible for promoting current affairs and enhancing social awareness to encourage discussion on current affairs among our members. Besides, CAC will publish statements on different topics such that students and the general public may know more about the stance of HKUSU.

The University Affairs Committee (UAC) will be responsible for the discussion of student welfare, regular communication with student representatives of various university committees and publicise information regarding university committees, academic development, and hall-college development. Meanwhile, UAC will issue statements and take other actions in response to university affairs, as well as reflecting opinions regarding campus facilities to the university authorities.

CAC and UAC have eight and seven seats for Full Members of HKUSU respectively. We welcome all Full Members to compete for the seats. We will organise a tea gathering beforehand and invite students who are interested to participate and know more about the structure and duties of the respective standing committees. 偃武修文：利瑪竇宿舍奠基九十周年

利瑪竇宿舍於九十年前的今天——1928年11月13日星期二奠基，宿舍所在的薄扶林道93號原址，前身為法拉角炮臺及附屬設施，隨著第一次世界大戰後種種裁軍舉措，炮臺亦棄戎從文，改建為作育英才的宿舍。

然而宿舍成立十餘年即逢第二次世界大戰及香港保衛戰，宿生投身軍旅奮不顧身，慷慨捐軀在所不惜，在西灣、黃泥涌、摩星嶺等前線和敵後戰場，以行動實踐出利瑪竇人團結、忠誠、犧牲的高貴情操。

宿舍奠基九十載，正值第一次世界大戰停戰一世紀，我們欣然期許世界和平之餘，亦應銘記前賢俠骨丹心，沒有他們無私奉獻，絕無今日的安和樂利。

Cannon gives place to Hall: 90th Anniversary of Ricci Foundation Day

On this day 9 decades ago-------13th November 1928, (which also happens to be a Tuesday) the foundations of Ricci Hall were built. Ricci Hall’s address, 93rd Pok Fu Lam Road, once laid the Fly Point Battery and its related facilities. Following the disarmament measures after the First World War, the abandoned Battery was converted and renovated into a Ricci Hall of the University of Hong Kong which is responsible of cultivating todays elites and leaders of the society.

Unfortunately, the outbreak of the Second World War and the Battle of Hong Kong, which happened only a decade after Ricci Hall’s establishment has caused us great loss and sorrow. Numerous residents volunteered to join the Hong Kong Volunteer Defense Corps (HKVDC). They fought battles in Sai Wan, Wong Nai Chung Gap, Mount Davis and more with courage and dignity. They defined Ricci Hall’s core and undefiable spirits—Unity, Loyalty and Sacrifice.

Our 90th Foundation Day overlaps with the Centenary Armistice Day, lest we forget those who honorably sacrificed and gave their lives for our better tomorrow.

【香港開埠一百七十七年 | 177 Years since Opening Up of Hong Kong】

一八四一年一月二十一日，大英帝國對華全權代表義律單方面公布《穿鼻草約》，作為第一次鴉片戰爭嘅和約。根據草約，清帝國將會割讓香港島及其海港俾英國。然而，英清雙方最終都冇喺呢份草約上面簽署，所以呢份草約最終都未成為一份正式嘅條約。不過喺一月二十五日，英國仍然派遣咗海軍指揮官卑路乍到香港島視察，並喺今日上環水坑口一帶登陸。翌日，即一月二十六日，鴉片戰爭中嘅英軍總司令伯麥帶領英軍登陸香港島，並進行升旗儀式，示意英國正式佔領香港島，香港開埠。

曾經有人形容香港喺「借翻嚟嘅時間，借翻嚟嘅地方」，開埠初期直至上世紀中葉嚟到香港嘅人都只當香港為一個暫居之處，視自己為呢個城市嘅過客。但係隨住時間流逝，香港人漸漸喺呢個小漁港落地生根，真正以香港為家。一百七十七年，香港受過數次瘟疫洗禮，亦經歷過戰火連天嘅日子，我哋見證殖民者嘅更迭，亦目擊自由、法治等等核心價值被人逐步奪走。但世世代代嘅香港人憑住拼勁同對呢個家嘅熱愛，係重重嘅困難同挫折當中化危為機，成就咗一個又一個香港奇蹟。

二零一八年，呢顆東方明珠嘅光芒即將燃燒殆盡，唔少人都已經對呢個城市嘅未來感到絕望。前路縱然難行，但我哋絕對唔能夠忘記香港由小漁港變成今日嘅國際大都會並唔係偶然，一路上有賴前人為我城獻上時間甚至性命，先至會有今日嘅香港。香港人必定要變得更堅強，走出陰霾，一齊創造下一個香港奇蹟。

On 21 January 1841, Sir Charles Elliot, Plenipotentiary of British Empire in China declared the Convention of Chuenpi, as the armistice of the First O***m War. According to the Convention, the Qing Empire shall cede the island and harbour of Hong Kong to the British Crown. Nevertheless, the Convention was not agreed nor signed by British or Qing governments, so the Convention remained a draft instead of a formal agreement. But on 25 January, Britain still sent Naval Commander Edward Belcher to inspect the Island and he landed at today’s Possession Point, Sheung Wan. On the next day (26 January), Commander-in-Chief Sir James Bremer led British troops to land on Hong Kong Island and a flag-raising ceremony was conducted, marking Britain’s cession of the Island and the opening up of Hong Kong.

Some described Hong Kong as “a borrowed place on borrowed time”, those arrived in Hong Kong between the colonial establishment and mid-twentieth century treated Hong Kong as a temporary home and saw themselves as passersby of the city. As time goes by, Hong Kong people settled and put down roots, turning a small fishing port into a place we call home. 177 years of time, Hong Kong had undergone several plagues as well as experienced the days of war. We witnessed the change of colonists and our core values, freedom and rule of law were gradually taken away. Despite adversity, generations of Hong Kong people turned difficulties and setbacks into opportunities with their enthusiasm and love to our home, achieving one after another miracle of Hong Kong.

The brilliancy of the Pearl of the Orient is about to die out in 2018, many are despaired about the future of the city. Even though the road ahead is long and difficult, we must not forget that Hong Kong was not transformed from a small fishing port into an international cosmopolitan city by accident, but instead by predecessors who sacrificed time and even life for our city along the way. Hong Kong people have to be stronger than ever, walking out of the haze and create the next Hong Kong miracle together.
