The Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, was established by law enacted by Delta State Government on 12th November, 2002 under the visionary leadership of the then governor, His Excellency Chief James Onanefe Ibori along with two (2) other Polytechnics at Ozoro and Ogwashi-Uku. The development of the Polytechnic was being managed by the Delta State Higher Education Project (DSHEP), which is a pa
rtnership between the Delta State Government and the University of West Minister, London, before the inauguration of the Interim Management Council (IMC) in May, 2004. The Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara is given the mandate to excel in Computing and Information Technology. This mandate is predicated on the fact that the world today is ICT-driven and only students, and indeed professionals, properly groomed in information technology can survive in a world that has become a 'Global Village'. This is why at the Polytechnic, all the programmes offered have been interwoven with practical IT skills. Hence, in addition to the courses students have been admitted to read, students in general are exposed to computing and IT and entrepreneurial skills. Also, an NBTE/UNESCO training centre has been established on campus in collaboration with the Polytechnic authority. This centre is expected to serve as a springboard for technical development which will benefit not only the students but the staff and the various communities around the institution. Within the nine (9) years of its existence, the Polytechnic has made giant academic strides. With only 3 National Diploma (ND) courses at inception in 2002, the polytechnic now has eight (8) ND courses all fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE),, Kaduna. Only in December 2009, the NBTE after its visitation to the polytechnic, under the able-leadership of the Ex-Rector, Professor TEMI AKPORHONOR, gave approval for the institution to run HND in Accounting, Electrical/Electronic Engineering-Power and Machines Options and ND in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT). This is in addition to the approval earlier given to the institution to run HND in Computer Science and Statistics. This means that apart from Mechanical Engineering and SLT, all programmes in the institution now run HND courses. This great polytechnic is currently growing rapidly, under the able-leadership of the Rector Dr. (MRS) C.
