Liv Uni Engineering Outreach 4 All provides a ‘home' to the many staff and students at the University of Liverpool who are promoting Engineering to the wider population through their numerous outreach and public engagement activities. This work is of increasing importance and complements the world-class research and teaching of which the School is justifiably proud. The lead academic is Professor

Mark White, who is supported by Dr Diane Taktak. Other staff and students are closely involved in the development and running of Liv Uni Engineering 4 All activities and events. One of our particular interests is the innovative use of 3D printing as an educational tool and we have run several very successful activities with schools over the past year. One of these - designing, building and testing a model of the new Anfield stadium roof truss - was one of four projects shortlisted as STEM Project of the Year from a field of 300 for the recent Educate 2016 Awards. Over the coming weeks, we shall tell you more about this and lots of the other things we have been up to. We hope you'll find it interesting and will be generous with your Likes and Shares

Today, the University of Liverpool in partnership with Shaping Futures is starting a new outreach project called Merseyside Young Engineers! The activities will be online this year with plans to offer hands-on activities when all the current restrictions are lifted.

Today we have the first of our TinkerCAD sessions. Our Y10s will spend a number of sessions designing their own extrusion die which we'll refine over the coming weeks. When all is finished we will be 3D printing their designs and culminating in a live "show and tell" at the end. Good luck Y10s!!!

We had a really great day The Big Bang North West yesterday, where visitors to our stand took part in the construction of a 1:200 scale replica of the Mersey Gateway bridge. During the morning session, students cast sections of the bridge deck (roadway) in plaster of Paris. Then in the afternoon, they built the bridge out from the pylons (towers) by suspending the deck sections using one very long cable.

Diane had a smashing time - literally. Fortunately the accident occurred after the event had closed.

Thanks very much to our students Isaac, Isaac and Ross for their help in making this such a great success!

Great fun at the Y12 Scholars' Day on Friday. Students were challenged to build a delivery system using a 3D pen to launch and guide a large ball bearing into a 2m long 25mm diameter tube. This sloped down to the carpeted floor, and they had to predict where the bearing would come to rest. This was the pick of the bunch. Well done to all who took part.

Some photos from our visit to St John Plessington in Bebington yesterday, where the Shaping Futures Building Bridges crew succeeded in installing the first cable. We were joined by Birgir and Gordon from Ramboll UK, who talked to the students about life as engineers and who also brought with them a sample strand of cable from the bridge. Keep going guys; it'll be fantastic when the bridge is complete.

Constructing the pylons – especially the tall south pylon - is likely to be the most challenging part of the project, so we decided to have a go ourselves.

The pylon is constructed in increments using a technique called slip forming. The formwork is secured around the current top of the structure, plaster mixed, poured and allowed to set. Then the formwork is loosened and raised up the newly cast section so that the process can be repeated.

Here’s a short photo story of our efforts.

We're busy preparing femur for our hip replacement outreach activities in January using our .robox 3D printers. Despite an overhang in excess of 90°, we're just about managing to print them without support structures, which speeds the process up.

Some photos from an excellent morning at Ramboll UK in Chester, where we were introducing our "Shaping Futures - Building Bridges" project. We successfully tried out pylon and deck section casting in plaster of Paris and then had a go at installing the cable.

Also present were Sarah Corran and colleagues from Bridges & Structures at Cheshire West and Chester Council

We really look forward to working with you guys over the coming months on this project and thanks go to Fay Newham in particular for her encouragement and support.
