Prof. Isaac Adebayo Highlights Biotechnology’s Role in Food Security, Healthcare During Valedictory Lecture

The Federal University of Technology Akure FUTA has celebrated the outstanding contributions and meritorious service of Professor Isaac Abayomi Adebayo as he formally retired from active service after over three decades of dedication to teaching, research, mentorship, and university administration.

While delivering his valedictory lecture on the 7th of May, 2026, Prof. Adebayo emphasized the critical role of biotechnology in transforming agriculture, healthcare, and industrial development globally.
Speaking on emerging trends and innovations in biotechnology, the don explained that advances in genetic engineering, precision agriculture, bioinformatics, and nanotechnology are reshaping modern science and providing sustainable solutions to global challenges.

According to him, biotechnology has significantly improved agricultural productivity through genetically modified crops and precision farming techniques capable of increasing yields, reducing pesticide use, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
He further noted that the integration of biotechnology with digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and data mining is accelerating discoveries in medicine and biological sciences. Predictive algorithms, he said, now enable scientists to identify gene functions and develop targeted therapies more efficiently.

Prof. Adebayo also highlighted the growing impact of biotechnology in healthcare, particularly in gene therapy, monoclonal antibody production, and marine pharmaceuticals. These innovations, he explained, are contributing to the development of more effective treatments for cancer, blood disorders, and other life-threatening diseases.
Describing the future of biotechnology as one driven by “programmable biology,” he stated that agriculture, medicine, and manufacturing would increasingly operate on shared genetic and technological principles.
He therefore called for increased investment in biotechnology research, innovation, and manpower development in Nigeria and other developing countries to fully harness the opportunities presented by the rapidly evolving field. He also urged universities, governments, and private sector stakeholders to strengthen collaboration aimed at promoting scientific research, encouraging innovation, and supporting the commercialization of biotechnology products for national development.

Prof. Adebayo joined FUTA on November 24, 1992, as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Animal Production and Health. Through years of commitment and academic excellence, he rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2003 and attained full professorship in 2012.
Widely regarded as an accomplished scholar and dependable mentor, he made significant contributions to veterinary medicine and public health in Nigeria. He participated actively in several national intervention programmes, including the National Trypanosomosis Campaign, Avian Influenza Campaign, and the COVID-19 awareness campaign between 2019 and 2021.
He was also credited with spearheading the establishment of the Veterinary Clinic and Ambulatory Service in the Department of Animal Production and Health at FUTA in 2008. In addition, he contributed immensely to curriculum development by designing several Animal Health-related courses within the department.
Prof. Adebayo began his academic journey at Christ School before proceeding to the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training for his OND programme. He later obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and Master of Veterinary Medicine (MVM) degrees from the University of Ibadan. He subsequently completed a split-site Ph.D. programme at Tuskegee University under the Ford Foundation Scholarship in 2004.
Beyond academics, the retiring professor served the university in several administrative capacities. He became the Departmental Postgraduate Coordinator in 2004 and later chaired the Students’ Disciplinary (Misconduct) Panel from 2013 to 2026. He also served as Chairman of the Agricultural Machinery and Mechanization Committee of the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT) in 2015.
Prof. Adebayo is a member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Nigerian Institute for Science and Technology, and the Nigerian Society for Animal Production.

At the valedictory lecture, A key Member of the FUTA Biotechnology Group Professor Boboye paid glowing tributes to Professor Adebayo describing him as a go getter and researcher par excellence.

In a tribute, the Head of the Department of Animal Production and Health , Professor Samuel Aro described Prof. Adebayo as “a mentor par excellence, counsellor, dependable confidant, and compassionate father figure to students and colleagues alike.”

Colleagues, students, and associates of the professor also took turns extolling his virtues and contributions, while wishing him a fulfilling and blissful retirement from active service in the university.

FUTA Registrar Calls for Digital Transformation at Ajayi Crowther University Training Seminar

The Registrar of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Mr. Charles Adeleye, has urged university administrators across Nigeria to adopt comprehensive digital transformation strategies to enhance efficiency, improve service delivery, and boost institutional competitiveness in today’s technology-driven environment.

He stated this while delivering a paper titled "Designing and Implementing a University-Wide Digital Administration Transformation Roadmap" during the 2026 National Training Workshop of the Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators (ANUPA), held at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo.

Adeleye observed that many universities still depend largely on manual and paper-based administrative systems, which often result in delays, inefficiencies, and poor service delivery. He emphasized that digital transformation has become a necessity, particularly following the Federal Government’s directive to phase out paper-based operations in public institutions.

He noted that digital transformation involves more than simply converting physical documents into electronic formats. Rather, it requires a fundamental overhaul of administrative processes, institutional policies, and organizational culture.

The presentation identified several critical areas that require urgent digitisation, including admissions, course registration, transcript processing, student records management, and staff-related services. Adeleye explained that the adoption of tools such as electronic forms, e-signatures, cloud storage, and centralized student information systems would greatly improve efficiency and transparency.

He also highlighted the importance of workflow automation, which enables administrative processes to move smoothly across departments without manual intervention. According to him, this would help reduce processing time, minimize errors, and strengthen accountability.

Despite the benefits, Adeleye acknowledged that digital transformation comes with challenges, including resistance to change, limited digital skills among staff, and cybersecurity concerns. He therefore recommended effective change management strategies, ongoing staff training, and the establishment of strong cybersecurity measures to protect institutional data.

In addition, he stressed the need for sound governance structures, including well-defined ICT policies, data protection guidelines, and dedicated committees to oversee digital initiatives. Without such frameworks, he warned, digital transformation efforts could become disjointed and unsustainable.

On implementation, Adeleye proposed a phased approach, starting with infrastructure development and staff capacity building, followed by system integration, optimisation, and ultimately innovation through smart campus technologies.

He concluded by emphasizing that digital transformation must be people-driven, noting that technology alone cannot achieve meaningful results without the support and preparedness of staff.

“Universities that embrace digital transformation will not only enhance administrative efficiency but also improve the student experience, strengthen research output, and position themselves competitively on the global stage,” he said.

The workshop brought together senior university administrators from across Nigeria to discuss strategies for modernizing administrative systems in higher education.

TheSTEMAfrica Initiative storms Akure to honour FUTA, the UniversityDuel 2026 First Runner-up

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) on Tuesday May 5 ,2026 was formally recognised as the Runner-Up of UniversityDUEL 2026, Nigeria’s premier STEM undergraduate competition, at a prize presentation ceremony held in their honour.

The recognition crowns a remarkable season in which FUTA’s three representatives (Faith Alabetutu, Matthew Ogundinwin & Akinola Olayinka) went unbeaten through five rounds of competition before bowing to Obafemi Awolowo University in the Grand Finale on April 19, 2026.

Out of 62 universities and 1,548 STEM undergraduates that entered the competition nationwide, FUTA finished second. A result that reflects the extraordinary caliber of their students and the strength of STEM education at the institution.

FUTA’s first appearance in UniversityDUEL 2026 was on the 7th of February in their opening preliminary match, where they faced UNILAG, the team that had topped the CBT qualifying phase. FUTA won with a commanding 52–15 victory.

Two weeks later, on February 21, they turned their attention to EKSU and delivered an even more emphatic statement, winning 65–8, a 57-point gap that proved their relentless momentum.

On March 15, they completed their preliminary games with a 44–28 victory over UNIBEN, advancing to the quarter-finals with a perfect 3-0 record.

The quarter-final on March 22 against LAUTECH was the season’s most nerve-shredding contest for the FUTA team. LAUTECH had strategised their way into the knockouts and refused to yield. FUTA prevailed by just two points, 37 to 35.

The semi-final on April 4 against UNN was an outstanding match. Predictions had suggested a close game, but FUTA produced arguably their finest performance of the season, racing to a 106–48 victory in an absolutely outstanding display that sent the nation into a frenzy and confirmed their place in the Grand Finale.

On April 19, 2026, before a national television audience on Africa Magic Family (DSTV Channel 154) and YouTube , FUTA faced Obafemi Awolowo University in the Grand Finale of University Duel 2026.

Their opponents had been equally dominant throughout the season, and the contest lived up to its billing as the Battle of the Best Brains.
Though the result was not in FUTA’s favour, their campaign, five wins from five, a 106-point semi-final, and a fearless run through the bracket, earned them the admiration and respect of the entire nation.

The presentation ceremony held at the Institution's TI Francis Auditorium marks the formal recognition of FUTA’s outstanding achievement in UniversityDUEL 2026.

Leading theSTEMAfrica Initiative team to FUTA were Mr Oladapo Ojo, the founder and consultant, Dr Ore Sofekun, who formally presented the runners-up prize to the FUTA team in the presence of the university community led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Professor Taiwo Amos who represented the Vice Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji.

Produced by JustMedia Productions and powered by theSTEMAfrica Initiative, UniversityDUEL stands as a flagship edu-tainment project from the creators of Cowbellpedia, InterswitchSPAK, CHAMP High School Quiz, and more.

Designed to spotlight intellectual excellence, the show pits top-tier undergraduates against each other in high-intensity quiz battles that test speed, accuracy, and depth of knowledge across STEM and general-knowledge categories. It’s a celebration of brainpower, competitive grit, and national pride.

The project is supported by partners, including MTN, whose continued commitment to education and innovation helps drive the growth of STEM initiatives across Nigeria.
