Faculty of Science, CUHK This page will be updated with the latest news of the Faculty. Please stay tuned!

The Faculty of Science at The Chinese University of Hong Kong was established in 1963, and currently has six major teaching units, they are as follows:

- School of Life Sciences
- Department of Chemistry
- Department of Mathematics
- Department of Physics
- Department of Statistics
- Earth System Science Programme

The various teaching units offer a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate p

rogrammes. These programmes are designed to provide a liberal arts education by combining rigorous natural sciences and mathematics courses with fundamental liberal arts subjects. Our graduates are well received by the local and international communities, with many of them continuing to pursue successful graduate studies at local and international universities. The Faculty is guided by 400 teaching and research staff, a number of which have received recognition and distinction from their respective fields of science, including a Nobel laureate, Fields medallist, and Academicians of the Chinese Academies of Sciences and Engineering. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2020), the research performances of various disciplines at the Faculty were rated once again as achieving “world-leading” standard, an honour garnered by the Faculty since 2014.

A research team led by Prof. LUO Haiwei and Dr. XIANG Nan from the School of Life Sciences at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 “𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚” 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. While rising ocean temperatures threaten reefs worldwide, nitrate pollution from sewage and agriculture is an often-overlooked danger that weakens corals and makes them more vulnerable to heat. The CUHK team found that corals thriving in highly polluted waters host exceptional bacteria that remove excess nitrate far more efficiently than typical microbes. This hidden microbial partnership allows some corals to endure harsh conditions, but could be overlooked in conventional surveys. The team’s innovative population-genomic framework made possible to identify the hyper-efficient denitrifying bacteria.

Professor Luo said, “This precise method for identifying functional microbial specialists can be applied to any ecosystem, opening a new pathway for using microbial therapies to enhance ecosystem resilience.” Other team members include Professor Christian R. VOOLSTRA from the University of Konstanz, Professor Benoit THIBODEAU and Professor Shelby E. MCILROY from CUHK. The findings have been published in the internationally renowned journal 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨.

A collaborative study co-led by Prof. ZHAN Yan ( Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences) and Prof. NI Peng ( Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences) has 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐫 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝. The team analysed sample 74220, a lunar pyroclastic deposit returned by in 1972, challenging the long-held view that such glass formed solely through rapid cooling and immediate degassing during brief eruptions.

By integrating computer models of diffusion, evaporation and cooling, the researchers reconstructed the full process from ejection to complete cooling. They found that after the hot material fell back to the lunar surface and was buried by surrounding debris, it continued to cool gradually and release gases for several years.

Professor Zhan said, “The research shows that a lunar volcanic eruption can be not just a single, brief event; its subsequent impacts can last for years.” The findings reshape how scientists interpret Apollo samples and deepen understanding of volatile migration, lunar water evolution, polar ice formation and the possibility of transient lunar atmospheres.
