POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW OPPORTUNITIES
ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE AND DEVELOPMENT (EPD)
In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council are engaged in hundreds of projects and programmes serving diverse users in South Africa and the region. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008. There are HSRC offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
The Economic Performance and Development (EPD) Programme consists of four sections –
• Structural change. This theme involves the analysis of economic dynamics and the kinds of shifts and transitions required to improve productivity and innovation, while creating employment, reducing inequalities and cutting poverty.
• Spatial development and migration. This theme analyses the interactions between city and regional economies, settlement patterns and migration trends with a view to creating more prosperous and liveable places, and tackling entrenched geographical inequalities.
• Sustainable development. This theme’s objective is to understand and improve the functioning of social programmes with broader developmental objectives, including policies to improve the social wage, to protect vulnerable groups, to promote food security, and to stimulate rural development in order to reduce poverty and address environmental and ecological concerns.
• Labour market dynamics. This theme focuses on the how, why and what of sustainable employment creation. It explores the role of different stakeholders in job creation, retention and progression. It includes issues of decent jobs and various labour market policies and programmes.
We are looking to appoint three dynamic candidates, in prestigious positions, as Post-Doctoral Research Fellows for a period of three years to be based in Pretoria, Durban or Cape Town.
