The following are the basics for every day safety:
When you leave your home:
– Make sure all your doors are locked,
– Make sure the gate closes behind you,
– Make sure there is no suspicious looking persons in the surrounding area, if so contact the nearest police station for patrols.
– A full description of the person or persons will assist the police in their look-out.
Out in the street:
– Keep your handbag close against you,
– Make sure your wallet is not visible – not in your back pocket,
– Do not put your handbag on the counter and walk or turn away,
– Do not leave handbags or other possessions in a supermarket trolley.
– Stay away from deserted or dark areas,
– As far as possible, leave valuables at home,
– If you are attacked or robbed, do not offer resistance or look at the person – your life is worth more than money, and
– Do not walk or wait for a lift on the freeway.
Vehicle safety:
– Physically check, by hand, that your vehicle doors are locked before you walk away to mitigate against thieves using signal jammers to block your remote locking system,
– Make sure you leave your valuables in the boot,
– Do not leave fi****ms in the vehicle, it is against the law,
– Do not drive around with your handbag or electronic devices on the passenger seat.
– Make sure your doors are locked and if possible close all windows while driving.
– Make sure all valuables are out of eye sight, Source:

HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

With the holiday season fast approaching, we are left with many decisions and preparations to make before packing our trailers and making our way to our holiday destinations.

Ensuring the security of family and property is a key priority at this time. "Statistics clearly show that criminal activity increases during the holiday season and it is therefore imperative for homeowners to take the right precautions and not let their guard down….

Ensure that your alarm is in working order. People tend to forget that an alarm system, like a car, has parts that age and wear out and therefore should be serviced at least once a year." Spectacular thunderstorms, which are rampant in the summer months, can also wreak havoc on alarm systems…"December is traditionally a busy period for security companies, so you should try and test your alarms at least three weeks before going on holiday. Testing should be done outside of peak hours (between 8am and 4pm or after 8pm) and if a fault is discovered, it should be immediately reported to the security service provider's technical team.

Due to increasingly high walls, electric fencing and other desperate measures that homeowners resort to in order to protect their property, the emergency reactions of armed response officers can be hindered. Homeowners should check with their security service provider about alternate access options available such as an EZI pad. The EZI pad, is an electronic device that is attached to the driveway gate, and allows the security officer access to the property once a secret code is activated.

Another important holiday safety tip is to be discreet when preparing to go away. "People should park their cars behind closed doors, if possible in their garage. Homeowners should also never leave a message on their answering machine stating that they are out of town,". Additional Personal Safety Tips for the Holidays Advise your security company if you are going away and ensure that you supply all the necessary information regarding nearby key holders, in case of an emergency

Inform your neighbours of your holiday plans so that they can keep an eye on your property.

Stop all newspaper deliveries and ask a friend or neighbour to collect your post. A bulging post box is a dead giveaway that you are not at home

If hiring a house sitter, ensure that you teach them how to use your alarm correctly. Double check that you have locked and secured all windows and doors before leaving home. Ensure that all your outside locks are a minimum of four lever locks or double cylinder security locks.

Never leave a key in the inside of an outer door which has glass panels or glass near the door lock. Having security gates fitted on outer doors is a highly effective security measure that gives you an extra line of defence. Sliding doors can be secured simply by placing a piece of timber cut to size in the sliding rail. Make sure that sliding doors cannot be lifted vertically.

Full fencing and sturdy gates are a good deterrent. Do not leave tools like ladders or spades outside, as they can be used to break into your house. Clear signage indicating that you have security also helps to discourage burglars.

STAY SAFE!!!

Handling Suspicious Vehicles and Persons.

Be constantly on the lookout for suspicious looking characters or vehicles and do not hesitate to report them to the Security.
Always be on the alert for potential danger, and be on the lookout for possible escape routes and safe refuge along the way.

If any person or vehicle in a high-risk area arouses your suspicions, treat it as hostile and take appropriate action, e.g. when approaching a red traffic light, slow down, check for oncoming traffic and if clear, drive through the intersection. Always report these incidents to the SAPS.

Should a suspicious vehicle in fact be a (unmarked) SAPS vehicle, the Police must identify themselves by:
Use of a blue light, loudspeaker or any other police equipment.
The flash of a badge through the window whilst driving is not enough.
The Police must go all out in order to let the public know who they are.

Consider the following actions:

o Switch on emergency lights and put your hand out the window (if possible), indicating that they should follow you. Your intention must be very clear and understandable.
o By exceeding the speed limit, you are sending out a message of suspicion, e.g. stolen / hijacked vehicle, transporting stolen goods, under the influence.
o Drive to the nearest Police Station or when in doubt, the nearest busy public area.
Always have your identity document and driver’s license in your possession as well as a pen and notebook to take necessary notes.
If a suspicious person is near your unoccupied vehicle, do not approach the vehicle. Walk to the nearest public area and ask for assistance.
Do not leave your vehicle unattended at a filling station.
Cell phones should be carried on the body. Perpetrators will not allow you to remove your cell phone and valuables from the vehicle during an attack.

Crime Prevention Check List

Remind everyone to be aware of suspicious persons and activity, e.g., occupied vehicles in unusual locations, persons photographing or diagramming your facility, telephone calls seeking suspicious information, etc.

Challenge any unfamiliar persons in or near your work/residence areas. If they do not appear threatening, engage them in conversation about what they are doing, who they work for, what their name is, etc.

Ensure that all security and video systems are operating and in good working order. Consider deploying security personnel to areas of high visibility and/or public access, e.g., public entrances, front desk areas, public-gathering points, etc.

Increase scrutiny of public parking lots and vehicles. Consider reducing vehicular access to areas close to buildings.

Be aware of any packages that are abandoned and/or appear to be suspicious.

Obtain identification from all persons doing business at your facility.

Secure uniforms, employee identification, company vehicles or other items that might be stolen or replicated and used to circumvent security measures.

It's Exam times! Avoid unnecessary frustrations by following these 10 safety hunts:
1. Never leave your gadgets unattended, it is an extra cash to criminals.
2. Backup all your work, you may loose your laptop, USB Sticks, Cellphone, tablets and carry bags at any given time. You may choose to use iCloud, OneDrive, Evernote, etc.
3. Avoid walking alone at remote areas, remember, street robberies always increase at this time. Use es**rt services where possible.
4. Do not show interest in freebies, discounts or sales behind closed doors. It maybe a trap bait. Stay safe at all times.
5. Be extra cautious when using bank ATM. Preferably, do not carry large amount of cash on yourself, rather swipe with your bank cards when buying, it's more safer.
5. Activate tracking programmes in your gadgets like cellphones and Tablets, use close friends or relatives numbers for reporting and reference. Remember, if you use only your phones you may loose both.

7. Beware of conmen, they operate better at this times. Do not trust anyone, trust your instincts.
8. Never leave your drink unattended, even for few seconds. Someone may be waiting for this opportunity to spike you.
9. Be aware of of street robbers who pretends to be lost and asking for directions. Do not go closer to any car claiming to be lost. As for you, never ask strangers for directions, rather approach security officers or police for directions.

THE INCIDENTS & TRENDS YOU NEED TO KNOW
An effort to help the SAPS clamp down on smash and grab crimes, we encourage motorists to remain vigilant at all times.

These criminals are very brazen. What used to be more of a night-time crime is now being committed in broad daylight at major intersections in peak hour traffic.

The victims aren’t only women; men are also being targeted. This type of crime is very invasive and very traumatic.

To protect yourself, please take the following security tips to heart and share them with family and friends:

Get off your cellphone, turn the radio down and have your wits about you when you approach an intersection or traffic light.

Be extra vigilant at night.

Take note of who is in the vicinity; on both sides of the road.

Don’t be distracted by anyone.

Don’t support or engage in conversation with "hawkers", "window washers" or "beggars"

Keep your windows closed and the doors locked.

Never have anything valuable in sight in the car and this includes your GPS!

Smash and grab window protection is a valuable shield and greatly minimises the chances of them actually being able to smash through the window.

If you are a victim, don’t ever try to pursue the criminals on their escape route.

If you are a victim, REPORT IT!
