Health Sciences students often carry more than the pressure to perform. Many are young adults far from home, learning in under-resourced clinical settings while facing the emotional weight of life-and-death situations.

For Dr Florence de Vries, is a way to make mental health visible, challenge the “try harder” narrative, and remind students that seeking help is a sign of strength.

Ms An-Maree Nel, Senior Psychologist at the Centre for Student Development and Counselling, reminds us that many medicine and health sciences students carry the emotional weight of clinical training behind a brave face.

is a visible call to change this culture by breaking stigma, normalising conversations about mental health, and showing students that asking for help is a strength.

🧦✨ Step up, stand out, and rock those crazy socks! ✨🧦

Today is , and we are turning the clinical floors into a runway of bright colors, wild patterns, and serious conversations.

While it’s a lot of fun to see neon stripes, cartoon characters, and mismatched pairs peeking out from under scrubs and trousers, this day carries a deeply important message. It’s all about breaking the stigma surrounding mental health in the healthcare profession.

Our doctors, nurses, and medical teams show up every single day to care for others. Taking care of our own is just as important. Wearing these socks is a visual reminder that:

💙It’s okay to not be okay.

💙Compassion starts from within.

We are building a culture of care, openness, and mutual support.

A massive shoutout to all our incredible healthcare professionals who bring their hearts (and their best sock game) to work every day. We see you, we appreciate you, and we’ve got your back!

On Friday, 5 June 2026, medical faculties across South Africa will stand together for CrazySocks4Docs, a campaign that raises awareness about mental health in healthcare and challenges the stigma that too often surrounds it.

At FMHS, we recognise the immense pressure faced by students and professionals on our clinical platforms. This campaign is a reminder that no one should carry that burden alone, and that care, compassion and openness are essential to a healthier healthcare culture.
