We are so proud of Prof. Natalie Schellack and Dr. Elmien Bronkhorst who collaborated with so many multidisciplinary colleagues to perform the first South African Antibiotic Stewardship programme (SAASP)-coordinated study which involved both the public and the private sector. πŸ‘πŸŽ‰πŸ˜

The primary objective of this study was to assess the utilization of non-specialised pharmacists in both public and private hospitals to implement community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) stewardship interventions.

What a remarkable co-learning experience that will provide a platform to further positively impact antibiotic stewardship in South Africa.

The study was published in the international journal of Antimicrobial Agents. Ths link to the article: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijantimicag.2020.1061🀩πŸ’ͺ

Congratulations to Mrs. Deirde Engler for publishing her Ph.D. in a very reputable international journal - Journal of Chemotherapy. πŸ₯³Mrs. Engler previously motivated us with the following quote from Robert Downey Jr., which truly speaks to her diligence and road to success:

β€œNothing will serve you better than a strong work ethic. Nothing."

We celebrate this amazing achievement with you and are fortunate to be able to learn from you πŸ₯³πŸŽ‰πŸ€©πŸ‘

Low- and middle-income countries face a
disproportionate burden of antimicrobial resistance and also face challenges related to resource
availability. Prof Natalie Schellack partnered with Virginia Commonwealth University in the USA to identify the resources available that can help institutions develop and sustain antimicrobial stewardship programs and monitor
outcomes. Read more on antimicrobial stewardship programs in low and middle-income countries across the globe, published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1201971220304367.

Parental knowledge of antibiotic use in URTI impacts significantly in the preservation of
antibiotic efficacy, yet has not been adequately studied in Nigerian settings. Prof Natalie Schellack collaborated with Nigerian researchers to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes and self-medicating practices of caregivers towards the use of antibiotics in URTI among children.
