The Street Store

The Street Store The Street Store, the world’s first rent-free, premises-free, free pop-up store for those in need, clothing well over 1 million people to date.

South African social change initiative gone global.

Every country has a lot of have-nots. But also has a lot of haves. But how do we remind the haves, that the have-nots need help? We need a middle ground, so we’re taking to the street. The Street Store. Made just out of posters, you hang up donated clothes and drop shoes into boxes, then the homeless help themselves

Because you have something the homeless don’t; clothes you choose not to wear.

Last Saturday, Street Store #1105 and #1106 came to life at The Haven Night Shelter WO Cape Town in Greenpoint and Salvation Army Southern Africa Territory in Braamfontein.

Across both cities, our teams, volunteers and hosts brought warmth, dignity and care to crisp winter mornings - creating welcoming spaces for guests to shop with choice and dignity.

Each pop-up store was filled through the generosity of donations received from individuals, partners and communities who chose to let go of clothing that could make a meaningful difference in someone else’s life.

Thank you to every volunteer, donor and partner who helped make these Street Stores possible.

"The most scalable ideas are often not the most technologically sophisticated. They are the ones simple enough for anyone, anywhere, to adopt."

The Street Store is featured in Fast Company South Africa penned by Editor in Chief, Wesley Diphoko, having been in conversation with Chairman of The Up&Up Group and Street Store patron, Mike Abel.

Volunteers collect donated clothing, organize it neatly on hangers and temporary displays, and create a pop-up retail-like experience on sidewalks, streets, or community venues. Those in need are then invited to “shop” for free. They browse, choose and decide.
