Advancing Molecular Biology Skills through the CATIR 5-Week Training Programme 🔬🧬

Four Master’s students in Veterinary Technology i.e. Salome, Keketso, Unarine and Onthatile were nominated to participate in the CATIR 5-Week Training Programme in July 2026, providing them with valuable theoretical and practical training in fundamental molecular biology techniques.

The programme covered key areas including:
🧪 Laboratory fundamentals and good laboratory practices
🧬 Nucleic acid extraction and PCR
🔬 Sanger sequencing
🧬 Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)

The training provided valuable hands-on exposure to molecular laboratory workflows and techniques relevant to biomedical research, molecular diagnostics and genomic analysis.

This informative programme was hosted by the Centre for Advanced Training and Innovative Research (CATIR) under the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and supported and sponsored by Thermo Fisher Scientific, the Department of Health, the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), and SAMRC. Training was offered for selected postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science at the Tshwane University of Technology.

Congratulations to our students for successfully completing this course. An excellent opportunity for them to strengthen their molecular biology competencies, gain practical laboratory experience, and develop skills that will contribute to their postgraduate research and future careers in science.

🎉 4th year, Quality Assurance & Quality Control Workshop 🎉

From 22–26 June 2026, the Veterinary Technology Programme, proudly hosted an engaging and highly successful Quality Assurance & Quality Control Workshop for our 4th-year Veterinary Laboratory Management students.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our outstanding facilitators, Dr. Ayesha Hassim (PhD in Veterinary Tropical Diseases) and Mrs. Khosi Mathebula (Senior Veterinary Technologist and Laboratory Manager), for their exceptional dedication and expertise. Their passion, enthusiasm, and energy created an interactive learning environment that kept students engaged throughout the week.
The workshop provided students with invaluable practical knowledge and a deeper understanding of laboratory quality management systems, quality assurance, and quality control. These are essential competencies for every Veterinary Technologist entering the profession.

One of the highlights of the workshop was the mock laboratory audit, where students experienced first-hand what to expect during workplace audits. This practical exercise challenged them to apply their knowledge, identify areas for improvement, and understand the importance of maintaining quality standards in a diagnostic laboratory. It served as an excellent preparation for the realities and expectations of the professional workplace.
The positive feedback from our students speaks volumes about the impact of this workshop. They left feeling more confident, better prepared, and equipped with the knowledge and practical skills needed to excel in veterinary diagnostic laboratories.

A sincere thank you to Dr. Hassim and Mrs. Mathebula for investing in the next generation of Veterinary Technologists and for inspiring our students through your professionalism, expertise, and commitment to excellence.
Together, shaping competent graduates who are ready to uphold the highest standards of quality in veterinary laboratory practice.
