Dietetics - Nelson Mandela University

Dietetics - Nelson Mandela University Dietetics is the study of nutrition as it relates to health.

With nutrition acknowledged as a key to the future of modern medicine, dietetics is one of the world’s fastest-growing professions. It’s also a career by which you can make a difference by providing communities with knowledge and advice on nutrition to improve quality of life. Today with so much misinformation about foodstuffs in the market place, the importance of the role of dietitians is even more critical.

🌟 Student Spotlight: Mqondisi Mthembu 🌟

Foodservice management is where nutrition, leadership and systems come together to support patient care at scale.

Mqondisi reflects:

"The Manager's chair, the menu, and the breakfast line. 🪑📋🍽️

How my foodservice management block ended.

This week marked the end of my foodservice management rotation at Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital. This block gave me something I didn't expect real, hands-on management experience."

"Because it's one thing to watch a manager work. It's another to sit in the chair and do it yourself."

"Today I did not just observe I made decisions. I balanced staff needs with operational demands. I saw how small choices (who works which shift, what's on the menu, how breakfast is issued) affect real people: the kitchen team, the patients, the budget."

Through this block, Mqondisi gained insight into how staffing, menu planning, budgets and kitchen flow all contribute to effective patient care.

We are proud to see our students growing through real responsibility and work-integrated learning. 👏

🌟 Student Spotlight: Lucwangco Gagela and Anathi Gqutyana 🌟

From the classroom to clinical practice, our students continue to apply foundational knowledge in ways that make a real difference.

Lucwangco Gagela and Anathi Gqutyana reflect:

"From first-year lessons to real-life impact.
As dietitians, we safely pasteurise donated breast milk—turning knowledge into life-saving nutrition for vulnerable babies.”

Through experiences like these, students see how early theoretical learning connects directly to patient care and public health. Handling donated breast milk requires precision, safety awareness, and a deep understanding of nutrition principles that protect some of the most vulnerable patients.

We are proud to see our students translating knowledge into meaningful action that supports infant health and community care. 👏
