Don’t Risk It — Remove It

Risk is like a person moving the wedge that’s holding back a massive rock.

The wedge is likelihood — how stable or unstable the situation is.

The rock is severity — full of potential energy, mass, and unstoppable force once it’s set in motion.

If the wedge slips, the rock might roll harmlessly away… or it might crush the person below, causing serious injury or worse. Once released, severity takes over — and no matter who’s in its path, damage is inevitable.

That’s why control measures matter. In this case, the situation is already unsafe. The safest approach?

Elimination — remove the rock entirely so the hazard no longer exists.

Substitution — replace the rock with something far less dangerous (in this analogy, perhaps something light and harmless).

Engineering Controls — secure the rock with a permanent, strong barrier so it cannot move, regardless of the wedge.

Administrative Controls — implement rules and procedures to ensure no one goes near the rock or tampers with the wedge.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) — last line of defense, protecting the person if the rock somehow still moves.

In safety, just like with the rock and wedge, the best solution is to remove the hazard entirely before it can cause harm.
