Internships That Build Skills and Confidence
This was last term’s project: restoring a near-scrap Toyota Spacio and selling it for a profit—right here on our campus!
Two years ago, we introduced these internships for our Year 2 students, giving them the chance to go beyond normal workshop practice and take on full projects. Why? Because jobs can be hard to come by, and we believe our students need more than technical know-how.
They need to know how to create value: assessing cars, sourcing and costing parts, budgeting, working as a team, and managing a project from start to finish. Just as importantly, they picked up workplace habits—turning up on time, sticking to the task, and (of course) keeping their phones well out of the workshop. 📵
And in case you’re wondering—the bodywork was outsourced 😉. Even good mechanics know when to call in the specialists.
It’s proper training for the real world, giving students both the skills and confidence to succeed—whether in full-time work or with a bit of work on the side.
The restoration turned out so well that we’ve been seeing the car around Ndola and on our campus—clearly, the owner decided to keep it! A true vote of confidence in the skills, discipline, and teamwork our students showed.
“Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings.” — Proverbs 22:29
