What if the enzyme that protects us from arsenic toxicity also helps produce energy? 🔬
For years, AS3MT has been known for detoxifying arsenic, a toxic element that poses a major global health challenge. But researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi asked a different question: Could AS3MT have another role?
Using zebrafish, they discovered that AS3MT is also essential for regulating metabolism. The enzyme helps maintain healthy mitochondria, the cell's energy producers. When AS3MT was lost, zebrafish developed disrupted liver metabolism, fatty liver disease, and reduced movement, revealing a previously unknown role in energy metabolism that is independent of its arsenic-detoxifying function.
These findings uncover a new link between metabolism and liver disease while highlighting the collaborative research environment at NYUAD, bringing together students, a Kawader Fellow, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, and collaborators from around the world.
