In the June Term project ‘Birthing Inequity: COVID-19 and Teenage Pregnancy in Uganda,’ students underwent the ‘In Her Shoes’ simulation. They wore basketballs tied around their waists with scarves for three hours, mimicking the physical burden of pregnancy. Everyday actions like sitting and walking revealed the significant challenges pregnant individuals face daily.

This exercise deepened students’ understanding of physical constraints and sparked discussions on the need for supportive environments for pregnant teens. They also created communication briefs to discuss teenage pregnancy empathetically, highlighting the intense social dilemmas young people face.

Abu Dhabi Children’s Library 📚🌟

Students had the opportunity to visit the Abu Dhabi Children’s Library at the Cultural Foundation as a part of their course “Purpose of Public Education” taught by Dr. Nancy Gleason, this summer June-Term 2023. During their visit, the students were shown around and introduced to the venues offered by the library. Many which included a museum exhibiting the works of Pascale Marthine Tayou, a VR educational room, a collection of historically broadcasted animes in the UAE, and an adult school of arts and handicrafts. Additionally, students had the rare opportunity to be introduced to “Mohammed Mandi,” a well-known caligrapher in the UAE and across the MENA region. 🌍

Our students Local Education Officer “Yiyang Xu” adds:

“Through this CBL experience, students gained a deeper understanding of how municipal facilities open to the entire public, such as libraries, exhibitions, and workshops, can be embedded in a state’s public education. This form of public education not only facilitates nation-building but also encourages personal growth.”🌟👍🏻

Students enrolled in the “What is Auto-fiction” J-Term course engaged in a perfume-making workshop by AlBeqsha to experience using locally sourced items and experiment with “translating” sensorial stimuli (including a sense of place) through perfume-making. 💫💜

The class LEO stated:

“The workshop was a unique experience to talk about the significance of scent and its importance in the UAE culture. We talked about how scent is part of our identity in the UAE especially specific scents that make us who we are like Oud or White Musk, two scents that I grew up smelling.” ✨

“It was very interesting to see each person going with their scents with their own diverse opinions on what smells and identify with what they think is a part of them.”
