Modernist architecture in the UAE #3: The Central Market was part of Abu Dhabi’s master plan drafted in 1968 by Egyptian architect Abdul Rahman Makhlouf. The structure was demolished in 2005 after a fire destroyed the building. From above, light flat roofs looked like myriad overlapping rectangles — there was a defined rhythm in the angles, overlaps, crossings, and openings of the roof. Makhlouf’s design also achieved a careful balance of light and space by simplifying architectural forms, making the most of the natural light, and allowing for wide passages. Dedicated to functionalism: every element was meant to facilitate trade, make visitors feel at ease, and encourage human interaction. Text is taken from The Abu Dhabi Guide: Modern Architecture: 1950s - 1990s written by Pascal S. Menoret, Assistant Professor of Middle East Studies at NYU Abu Dhabi. Don’t forget to send us pictures of modernist architecture in your neighborhood!

Continuing our feature on modernist architecture in the UAE #2: The first Dubai Airport was constructed in 1959 and opened only one year later in 1960. In the 1970s, a new three-storey structure was built by Costain International to house the new airport. Work began in 1969 and was completed in 1971. The structure’s rectangular and linear forms, large windows and flat roofing are all modernist influences. Are there modernist inspired buildings in your neighborhood? Send them to us and we will pin them up in our exhibition, Building Bauhaus! @ Jean-Paul Najar Foundation
