Dr. Bassam Atallah Contributes to International CME Activity on Emerging Heart Failure Therapies

The College of Pharmacy at Dubai Medical University announces the participation of Dr. Bassam Atallah, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, in a Continuing Medical Education (CME) activity hosted by Medscape in May 2026. The program, titled “Beyond SGLT2 Inhibition: The Emerging Role of Dual SGLT1/2 Inhibition in Heart Failure,” brought together leading clinical voices to explore the next frontier in heart failure pharmacotherapy.

Dr. Atallah joined Dr. Biykem Bozkurt — former President of the Heart Failure Society of America and one of the foremost authorities in cardiovascular medicine — in a focused scientific discussion on the evolving landscape of heart failure and cardiometabolic disease management. His contributions centered on innovative treatment strategies and the shifting clinical paradigms shaping modern cardiovascular care.

Dual SGLT1/2 inhibition represents one of the most closely watched developments in cardiometabolic pharmacology, with growing evidence supporting its potential to extend the benefits of established SGLT2 inhibitor therapy across a broader patient population. Dr. Atallah’s engagement in this international forum reflects both his clinical expertise and his commitment to ensuring that global advances in therapeutics inform local and regional practice.

Dubai Medical University and Emirates Health Services Host Virtual Webinar to Promote Oral Health Awareness

In a joint effort to advance community health education, Dubai Medical University College of Pharmacy, in collaboration with Emirates Health Services (EHS), recently organized a virtual webinar focused on promoting general oral health awareness across diverse age groups.

The session formed part of an ongoing community engagement and public health campaign aimed at equipping individuals with practical knowledge on maintaining oral hygiene and preventing common dental diseases. The initiative reflects a broader commitment by both institutions to strengthen preventive healthcare through education and outreach.

The webinar was moderated by Dr. Ahmad El Ouweini, Assistant Professor at Dubai Medical University College of Pharmacy, who guided the discussion and facilitated audience interaction throughout the session. The featured speaker, Dr. Nura Jumaa, a pediatric dentist with Emirates Health Services, delivered an in-depth presentation on oral health practices tailored to different stages of life.

Dr. Jumaa emphasized the importance of establishing strong oral hygiene habits early in childhood, noting that preventive care significantly reduces the risk of dental complications later in life. She also addressed common oral health challenges affecting adolescents, adults, and the elderly, highlighting age-specific strategies for disease prevention, including proper brushing and flossing techniques, balanced nutrition, and the importance of routine dental check-ups.

A key component of the session was its focus on community engagement. Dr. Jumaa shared insights from her work in outreach programs under Emirates Health Services, where she actively promotes healthy oral health lifestyles through educational initiatives targeting families and schools. Her presentation underscored the role of public awareness in reducing the prevalence of preventable oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal conditions.

DMU College of Pharmacy Faculty Delivers Expert Webinar on Renal Pharmacotherapy

Prof. Sathvik B. Sridhar, Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the College of Pharmacy, was invited as a Resource Person for the Clinical Pharmacy Discussion Group (CPDG) Webinar Series, organized by the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Kerala State Branch, India.

Prof. Sathvik delivered a specialized session entitled "Renal Dose Matters: Clinical Challenges and Practical Strategies for Pharmacists," addressing one of the most critical areas of clinical pharmacy practice — medication management in patients with renal impairment.

The session provided an in-depth exploration of drug dosing optimization across a range of renal conditions, including chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, and patients undergoing dialysis. Participants gained practical guidance on assessing kidney function, adjusting loading and maintenance doses, understanding drug dialyzability, timing doses in relation to renal replacement therapy, and applying therapeutic drug monitoring for high-risk medications such as antibiotics, antidiabetic agents, and vancomycin.

The webinar drew a diverse audience of pharmacy academicians, clinical and hospital pharmacists, postgraduate students, and CPDG members, fostering a rich environment for professional exchange and learning.

Drawing on guideline-based principles and real-world clinical case discussions, Prof. Sathvik underscored the indispensable role pharmacists play in enhancing medication safety, preventing drug-related toxicity, and delivering patient-centered care in the context of renal dysfunction.

Dubai Medical University Advances Interprofessional Education with Prescribing Skills Training Program

Dubai Medical University (DMU) has successfully completed the second round of its Longitudinal Interprofessional Education (IPE) Initiative focusing on Prescribing Skills, a forward-looking program that brings together students from the College of Pharmacy and the College of Medicine to develop the collaborative competencies essential to modern, patient-centered healthcare practice.

This latest round of the program centered on one of the most clinically significant areas of prescribing safety: Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs). Students from both colleges engaged in a rich, structured learning journey designed to build their skills in identifying, managing, and presenting ADRs — all within an interprofessional framework that mirrors real-world clinical team dynamics.

The program was delivered through a carefully designed blended format, incorporating both virtual and in-person components. Virtual sessions allowed students to prepare collaboratively and engage with foundational concepts ahead of the on-campus experience. The in-person sessions, held at DMU's new campus, served as the culmination of this learning arc — bringing pharmacy and medical students physically together for interactive, case-based, and team-based learning (TBL) exercises.

Working in interprofessional teams, students applied their knowledge to realistic ADR case scenarios, practicing the kind of collaborative problem-solving, clinical reasoning, and cross-disciplinary communication that will define their professional lives.

The Longitudinal IPE Initiative reflects DMU's institutional commitment to preparing graduates who are not only technically proficient but also equipped to function effectively as members of interprofessional healthcare teams. The program is structured to evolve across multiple rounds, progressively deepening students' competencies in collaborative practice and prescribing skills training.
