sharing information (1) Wednesday Date 1393 /7/16
An important communication act is giving and getting information Exchanging information involves giving information ,giving information, giving directions, teaching a process ,asking questions to get information, or checking out what some one said. Many people take this act for granted. Some speakers assume that telling someone something equals teaching that person how do something: " I told you: Others mix u steps when explaining a process or forget to include key information.
Something listeners do not know they have incomplete or inaccurate information because they don't know very much about the subject. They don't ask questions because they don't ask questions because they don't want to appear stupid .it institution a confusing wise listener who is able to request additional information or question a confusing point. communicating to share information serves as the basis for all speaking and listening. Unless you send and receive messages accurately, You cannot get your point across, and you cannot truly understand another person's ideas.

Communication competence and Workplace Culture

Communication competence
Sometimes you may think workplace behavior only doing tasks correctly. So if you can pump gas, plant flowers, or fix a computer, you may think you are doing competent work. Most of the time, however, you will discover there,s more to this picture! Success in most positions depends on effective communication. People who communicate effectively are called competent communicators, which means they are capable or skilled at speaking and listening. Competent communicators have a wide range of communication skills and know which ones to use in specific situations in order to reach their goals .
There are five communication acts that are the major reasons for communicating. The five acts are (1) sharing information,(2) managing persuasive messages,(3) discussing feelings, (4) following social rituals, and (5) using imagination.

Types of communiction
There are several different ypes of oral comunicaton that affect the work place .They include
interpersonal communication
groupor team communication
public speaking

these types of communication reflect the context for communication, especially the number of people involved adntheir realionshis. There are other types of communication, such as intrapersonal communication ro mas communication, that may also b mentioned.

Intrapersonal communication refers to personal thoughts communincation with yourself that occurs within your mind.

(6)Communication occurs in a context
The term context refers to the setting or situation in which you are communicating . You will adapt your messages to time, place, occasion, and people involved. you will consider the listener's culture and expectations. For example you , would be unlikely to talk with your best friend about a recent date in the middle of planning meeting for the arts fair. It would not be the right time or place to do so. You will also attempt to adapt your language to your listeners. This means deciding whether to use slang or deciding how simple your words should be. Communication is a very complex process that requires careful attention in order to share meanings effectively.

(5)Communication is blocked by interference
When a person has trouble receiving the message that is being sent, it is often because of interference "noise" inference refers to something that blocks a listener's ability to receive a message. External distractions such as loud music , a big screen TV ,or car traffic may interfere with receiving the oral message .Internal distractions such as personal worries, daydreaming or physical illness may also cause interference.

(4)Communication depends on feedback
The term feedback refers to the verbal and nonverbal messages listeners send that tell speakers how they are doing. Feedback may be positive or negative feedback tells you there is a problem .You may need to change what you are doing or saying. When listeners look confused frown, or stare into space you probably need to adjust your message, positive feedback tells you to continue what you are doing or saying .smiles ,nods and direct eye contact usually indicate the listener is with you.
Assume you are trying to convince the local newspaper editor to run a free ad for the community soup kitchen's fund-raising auction. As you talk to her, you will watch her face to shows signs of interest, If she looks confused you may explain again how many lines the ad should contain. At the same time, the editor is listening to you and watching you to see how involved you are. If your voice and face convey energy and excitement about the fund raiser she is more likely to believe you are committed to the cause. If you have a flat tone and stare at the floor, she may not believe you are really involved.

(3) communication involves sharing of meanings
look at the following messages and ask yourself how a listener might be confused by each one:
"It's a great summer job for making lots of money."(but it's really boring)
"The boss said there would be some heavy lifting."(He didn't say seven hours a day!)

(2) communication is transactional
communication is not just a matter of trading messages. speakers and listeners share the responsibility for being good communicators. the don't just send messages back and forth. Transactional means that both communicators are constantly involved in and adjusting to the process. Communication works like a skilled tennis match: both tennis players are involved constantly in the game. When good player may hits the ball , he or she moves into position to prepare for the return shot .A poor player may just stand there after hitting the ball instead of anticipating the return shot. in communication , You send and receive messages simultaneously. This transactional process may be pictured in they following way:
you can imagine how and interview , a coaching session, or a chess match works in this manner.

(1) Communication is more than speaking and listening
Look back at the opening case study and identify moments when communication involved more than speaking and listening. You will see examples of nonverbal messages as a park attendant pointed in a direction, noticed how frustrated a child looked, or smiled at one of the boys. Human beings use words, or verbal messages as well as non verbal messages to connect with each other. nonverbal message are those expressed without words; they rely heavily on facial expressions, body movements, appearance, and vocal tones.
