Odometer - A path to conscious travel. A Project Work

When we set off, every kilometer brings us new impressions and experiences. These different perceptions and new changes along the way show us that we are travelling. In the future, we will be travelling by various autonomous means of transport, be it self-driving cars, trains or simply on foot. This means that the odometer will become less important. The odometer reflects distance and shows the distance travelled and the experiences associated with it. In this project, the odometer becomes a personal accessory that documents your journey, regardless of the means of transport you use.

Pape, is a product family which are essentially made of densely compressed paper fibers and contain a soluble and recyclable printed circuit board, a Bachelor´s Thesis by Franziska Kerber, 2024.

Pape is a product family consisting of a WLAN router and a smoke detector, which are essentially made of densely compressed paper fibers and contain a soluble and recyclable printed circuit board (PCB board). These products are designed to be both cost-effective and user-friendly to keep in a closed material loop.
By using unusual materials for electronic devices, the product sets new standards in the area of sustainability and reduces electronic waste. The foreseeable obsolescence of the technical components used is combined with a sophisticated end-of-life system.
PAPE has won the national round of the 2024 James Dyson Award and is now shortlisted as one of the international top 20 projects!

Long-distance train with a dedicated platform for the mobility transition, a Master´s Thesis by Eric Gober, 2025.

Train travel is often hampered by numerous barriers, leading passengers to opt for short-haul flights or travel by car. The aim of this project was to improve the passenger experience at multiple touchpoints on the train and at the station. The weather-protected platform was divided into "waiting islands," and the position of the carriages was communicated more clearly in advance to avoid stressful situations. Measures were also implemented inside the train to make long journeys more comfortable. These include swivel seats facing forward, spacious entrance areas, attractive children's areas, a pleasantly designed dining car as a lounge, wheelchair spaces suitable for long distances, easy-to-access bicycle parking, and luggage storage facilities.

Onola, is a ski glove based on a circular design approach under the topic of 'Design for Disassembly' by Nico Klinglmayr, 2026.

Onola is a ski glove based on a modular and circular design approach. The aim was to create a durable product that accompanies the user over many winters. The mitten consists of clearly separated functional layers that can be specifically replaced or repaired when worn. Highly stressed areas are intentionally designed as interchangeable components. This significantly extends the product’s lifespan and conserves resources.

Sustainable Coffee Making, a system approach for circularity, maintainability, and resource awareness. A Master Thesis by Nikolaus Potapow, 2025

Coffee plays a vital role in daily life for many, yet its rich history and global impact are often overlooked. From cultural significance to the millions of livelihoods it supports, coffee's full story remains out of reach for most consumers. Thus, this thesis delves into the socio-historical context, challenges regarding sustainability and ethical production, as well as practical issues experienced by users. The result is a system that aims for empowering users and enabling stakeholder-overarching communication. A platform connects users with roasters and coffee producers, raising awareness of coffee's journey from plant to cup. The product, a coffee grinding and brewing unit, enables users to prepare espresso-based beverages with roaster-supplied recipes, promoting a sensory and sustainable approach to coffee making. The design is guided by ease of maintenance and circularity.

This semester, we are excited to welcome MARCH GUT as guests on our studio couch. MARCH GUT is among the leading design offices in Austria and was founded in 2010 by Christoph March and Marek Gut. The Studio works across product and furniture design, as well as interior and exhibition design. With an analytical approach and a constant search for new paths, the studio develops function-oriented solutions with a clear design focus. Their clients include Thonet Vienna, Swarovski, Silhouette Eyewear, Molto Luce and Atomic. In the field of exhibition design, they have realized projects for institutions such as Ars Electronica, the Salzburg Museum, and the Landesmuseum Linz. We are very happy to welcome such interesting designers and are looking forward to an inspiring conversation.

Closed Loop Footwear, a Master Thesis by Dominik Scherrer, 2025
Designing for a circular economy through material innovation, modular construction, repairability, and user involvement.

Faced with environmental problems such as climate change, waste pollution, and resource scarcity, the European Union has set the ambitious goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050. A central component of this plan is the European Green Deal, which includes a Circular Economy Action Plan. This plan obligates manufacturers to take more responsibility for the entire life cycle of their products. For the footwear industry, where the majority of products are still incinerated or landfilled today, this represents a major shift. “Closed Loop Footwear” explores how circular economy principles, such as repairability, disassembly, and recyclability can be applied to shoes to reduce their environmental impact. Furthermore, new opportunities such as on-demand production, customization, and DIY are examined.

Take Time to Pause, a sports bag in cooperation with HEAD by Hannah Keil, 2025

Thanks to its integrated seat, this shoulder bag allows you to relax and unwind in the great outdoors. It is specially designed for winter sports, as it draws attention to the importance of taking breaks during a long day of skiing. This allows you to alternate between sporting activities and relaxation in nature.

Make It Yours, a project on the topic of 'Design for Disassembly' by Simeon Sturm, 2026.

A vehicle concept designed as a compact, sustainable, and future-oriented alternative to conventional motorized individual transport. At its core is the idea of a consistently modular structure that enables the vehicle to remain usable in the long term not only from a technical perspective but also on an emotional level. All interior components – including seats, control elements, displays, and the dashboard – are designed as independent modules and can be replaced without specialized tools. This allows even users with little technical experience to easily replace defective or outdated components, simplifying repairs and significantly extending the vehicle’s lifespan.

Centryc eyewear is a spectacle system a project on the topic of 'Design for Disassembly' by Perotin Götz, 2026.

Centryc eyewear is a spectacle system in which the frame is adjusted to the customer's measurements directly at the optician's using interchangeable elements in various sizes. Since the frame positions the lenses so precisely, they can be manufactured and stored in a standardized manner. This reduces costs and eliminates waiting times. With centryc eyewear, reading and safe mobility in road traffic are immediately possible again. In addition, the glasses can be enhanced with add-ons such as sun protection, blue light protection, or testing lenses for greater functionality.
